On September 4, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , a representative of Gojek Vietnam Company said: "We have decided to close our business operations in Vietnam from September 16, 2024."
Sharing about this shocking decision, a Gojek representative said that this is a plan within the strategy of the parent company (GoTo, headquartered in Indonesia) to strengthen its business operations.
“This strategic decision was made to allow the company to focus on activities that can have a significant impact on the market in a sustainable manner, in line with GoTo's commitment to achieving long-term sustainable business growth,” said a Gojek representative.
Gojek representatives also sent sincere and deep thanks to all employees, users, driver partners, and restaurant partners, with the assessment that they are "people who are an indispensable part of our business operations in Vietnam".
Regarding responsibility to partners on the platform, a Gojek representative said: "We will provide necessary support to all affected parties during this transition, while complying with current regulations and laws."
Fierce ride-hailing market
Gojek's decision to exit Vietnam reflects the fierce competition in the ride-hailing market, but also reflects a broader industry trend as companies reassess their market presence to optimize growth.
Similar moves were seen in other companies like Shopee, which withdrew from all European and Latin American markets except Brazil.
Gojek is GoTo Group's on-demand service platform, following a multi-service ecosystem model, connecting users with a range of services, from transportation, food delivery, logistics and many more.
Gojek was founded in 2010, initially focusing on delivery and ride-hailing services, before launching its app in Indonesia in January 2015. Since then, Gojek has grown to become a leading on-demand services platform in Indonesia, expanding into Vietnam and Singapore.
