On the afternoon of April 16, Tran Thi Nhi Yen surprised everyone when she appeared on the women's 400m race track of the 2025 Thong Nhat Speed Cup. Facing 3 people with strengths in this distance, the athlete from Long An still finished second, winning the silver medal.
She finished with a time of 54.74 seconds, just behind the veteran Quach Thi Lan (53.85 seconds). 400m is not Nhi Yen's forte, because she prefers short distances, with speeds of 100m and 200m.
On the morning of April 17, she won another gold medal at the Speed Cup. This time, Nhi Yen returned to the familiar 100m race. Despite fierce competition, she still proved her class by finishing first with a time of 11.85 seconds, winning the gold medal. This result is not too far from when she participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics (11.79 seconds).
Phung Thi Hue finished second (11.93 seconds), while reigning national champion Ha Thi Thu disappointed when she only finished third on her home turf (11.97 seconds).
In an interview after winning the women's 100m gold medal, Tran Thi Nhi Yen said: "This is only the first tournament of the year, I have just returned from injury so I have determined that the time to complete the distance is not as expected. Instead of focusing on speed, I focus on endurance and regaining the feeling of competition. At this time, I have completely recovered from injury and can practice heavy exercises."
Nhi Yen also shared that although the result at the Speed Cup was not the best, she believes she will improve the situation when participating in the Asian Athletics Championship taking place in May.
In addition to the medal in the 100m event, Nhi Yen also shared the reason for participating in the event that is not her forte, the 400m. She said: "I want to test my ability to see how far I can go. I also said that in this tournament I will focus on endurance, so choosing the 400m distance is suitable. However, to be honest, I was quite surprised to win the silver medal. This achievement was not in my calculations and the coaching staff's."
On the afternoon of April 17, Nhi Yen will participate in the final distance of 200m and will likely win another gold medal.
That same morning, Luong Van Thao won the 100m event. Second place was Dang Hoang Anh and third place was Nguyen Dang Khoa.
