With a large area and natural advantages of terrain and climate, 11 mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa are “owning” rich local products. With the orientation of calling for and attracting investment to develop high-value products, many enterprises, cooperatives, and individual households have invested in forming professional production facilities, creating products with quality, brand and competitiveness in the market.

Special products
Not only is it an attractive destination for tourists who love to explore and experience nature, the vast Pu Seo mountain range of Thuong Xuan district with its year-round natural forest trees and flowers has long been exploited by local people to develop the beekeeping industry for honey. The bees here have grown to a scale of 1,000 colonies, supplying thousands of liters of honey to the market each year.
Also with honey products, in Binh Luong commune (Nhu Xuan), with the advantage of a large area of special-use forests, local people have successfully developed the profession of beekeeping for honey. The beekeeping club in Binh Luong commune was also established to support people with farming techniques, how to make beekeeping boxes, how to care for and create queen bees, and share experiences in caring for, harvesting and consuming honey. Thanks to knowing how to select quality queen bees and male bees to multiply the colony, some beekeeping households in the commune have created high swarming properties, little breed degeneration, so the yield and quality of honey collected are also very effective. Binh Luong commune has currently developed about 700 honey bee colonies, harvesting an average of 1,500 to 2,000 liters of honey each year.
It is known that the whole province currently has 100,000 honey bee colonies, mostly concentrated in mountainous districts such as Thach Thanh, Thuong Xuan, Nhu Thanh, Cam Thuy... Some localities have successfully oriented and built honey products that meet provincial OCOP standards, such as: Huong Hoa honey (Thach Thanh), Yen Nhan wild flower honey (Thuong Xuan), Binh Son pure four-season wild flower honey (Trieu Son)...
In addition to honey, 11 mountainous districts also have hundreds of unique, branded products that have been certified as OCOP products. Typically, Thuong Xuan district has products such as Kim Hoang Hau melon, safe vegetables and fruits, cinnamon and cinnamon products, handicrafts and fine arts such as bamboo straws, pipes, seedlings, ornamental plants, and regional culinary specialties. Cam Thuy district has typical products such as dong vermicelli, honey, areca nut sticky rice, sour sausage... Quan Hoa district is famous for longan candy, honey, dried bamboo shoots, sticky rice and many highland culinary dishes, such as: smoked buffalo meat, thang co, banh u, grilled fish... Nhu Xuan district has strengths with a 982ha fruit tree area and OCOP products such as: Queen herbal tea; mac khen salt...
Turn advantage products into high value products
Despite many difficulties in terms of terrain, capital, and technology, with the mechanisms and policies to attract investment from the province and localities, many mountainous districts have begun to receive positive signals when businesses and cooperatives are interested in developing projects; supporting technology transfer to turn the potential in mountainous districts into real advantages.
Quan Hoa district's typical products are displayed at the 2023 Western Trade Fair.
Thanh Hoa has the largest bamboo, rattan, reed, and rattan area in the country with 78,000 hectares, mainly concentrated in mountainous districts. This is an opportunity and expectation for the development of industrial processing, handicrafts, and craft villages. Not only does it contribute to creating products with much higher commodity value than raw exports, but it is also an opportunity to develop craft village tourism with interesting experiences for visitors.
Since 2021, the high-tech bamboo product manufacturing factory project in Bai Bui industrial cluster, Lang Chanh town, invested and built by Bamboo King Vina Joint Stock Company, has been realizing the "dream" of turning bamboo into high-value products of Thanh Hoa. With a capacity of 1,500 tons/day, the factory has brought to the market 8 main product groups such as: agricultural crops, bamboo fences, bamboo furniture, three-sided milled slats for interior decoration, bamboo residential housing modules, bamboo handicrafts, bamboo laminated bars and bamboo laminated blocks. The source of raw materials is of high quality, processed on automated production lines from Germany and China; especially the chemical-free modification technology, the product currently meets the standards for direct export to the US, EU, Korea... It is known that the design of raw material sources for the factory to operate in the near future will include large areas of bamboo forests in the districts of Quan Hoa, Quan Son, Ba Thuoc... opening up a new direction for the bamboo area of the province.
In Nhu Thanh district, producing cassava vermicelli is a long-standing traditional profession in Yen Lac commune. Since 2021, when Yen Lac Agricultural and Commercial Services Cooperative invested in improving production quality and innovating product designs and packaging, the Yen Lac cassava vermicelli brand has achieved 3-star OCOP certification. Mr. Pham Cong Bao, director of the Cooperative, said: "Each year, the Cooperative produces and consumes about 12 - 13 tons of cassava vermicelli, with a revenue of 1.2 - 1.3 billion VND, bringing economic efficiency, creating jobs for workers and stabilizing income for cassava growers in the locality".
Mr. Vi Ngoc Tuan, Vice Chairman of Thuong Xuan District People's Committee, said: "Along with encouraging farmers to produce, we have encouraged and encouraged businesses and cooperatives to invest in more machinery and technology; at the same time, participate in programs and promotional activities to expand the consumption market. Currently, many typical products of the district have been produced by establishments following the correct process, ensuring food safety when brought to the market and are trusted and welcomed by consumers."
According to the assessment of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, one of the great potentials that the mountainous districts of the province need to continue to pay attention to and invest in is the development of souvenir and gift products to increase attractiveness, encourage spending and spread and promote the image of local tourism. This is not only an activity that brings economic benefits, creates sustainable livelihoods for the local community, increases the structure of export goods, but also contributes to affirming and promoting the traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities throughout the localities at home and abroad.
Accordingly, each locality needs to pay attention to producing souvenirs for tourists from local products, such as Lang Chanh bamboo, Thuong Xuan cinnamon, brocade in the mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa... In particular, it is necessary to focus on diversifying product designs, improving quality, increasing the aesthetic factor and applicability of each product; combining traditional elements with modern trends to create unique products, attracting tourists, aiming to build a separate brand for traditional handmade souvenirs of the mountainous areas of Thanh Hoa.
