In the increasingly modern life, besides shopping through e-commerce platforms, many people, including a part of young people, still maintain the habit of going to traditional markets, choosing to buy food and supplies for themselves and their families.

For more than ten years, Ms. Phan Thi Hue (54 years old), currently living in Vinh Thuy commune, Vinh Linh district, has maintained the habit of going to the market in the morning. Whether she is just buying food or household items, she still likes to go to the market and personally choose the items that suit her family's needs.

“My family are all civil servants, we don’t have much time to meet each other during the day, so we pay a lot of attention to family meals. For me, to cook a delicious and nutritious meal, the food must first be fresh. My house is about 3 km from the market, so every morning I go to the market early to buy fresh fish, shrimp and meat. In addition to food, I also like to go to the market to buy some other items. Choosing and buying things myself is more reassuring,” said Ms. Hue.

In recent years, especially after the COVID-19 outbreak, her children have taught her how to shop online on e-commerce platforms. According to her, online shopping has many conveniences, but she still likes the feeling of going to the market and shopping according to her personal preferences.

Ms. Hue added: “It is difficult to know the quality of the goods when looking at them on the phone screen, and exchanging them back and forth is very time-consuming. Moreover, household items can be ordered online, but food can be bought at the market, which is both fast and convenient.”

Although she is young, Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy Linh (30 years old), currently living in Cam Lo town, Cam Lo district, still likes the feeling of shopping at the traditional market. “I like the bustling atmosphere of the market. When I was a child, I liked to follow my mother to the market to buy food to cook every day.

At the market, the food is always fresh. Thanks to going to the market, I learned how to distinguish between different types of meat, fish, and seafood, whether they are fresh or not... This was very useful during the time I was away from home studying and had to live independently. Going to the market also brought joy when I met many people. Sometimes after shopping, I would linger and chat with the ladies selling pork and fruit," Linh confided. Later, when she returned to her hometown for work, she did not have time to go to the market every day, so every 2-3 days, Linh took the opportunity to go to the market once to buy enough food for several meals.

Similarly, Phung Quynh Trang (24 years old), currently living in Dong Ha City, also prefers to shop directly at the market. Trang often visits the flea market near her house. If she cannot find what she needs, she will go to Dong Ha market, which she still considers a "shopping paradise" for the people of Quang Tri.

Trang said: “When I don’t know what to eat, I will walk around the market and think of many things to buy. The market not only sells fresh food but also many delicious snacks such as: turmeric noodles, mixed vermicelli, banh loc... ”. Trang also revealed that when going to the market, you just need to know how to bargain a little to buy “delicious - nutritious - cheap” items.

Living in the 4.0 era, many people cannot deny the convenience of online shopping. Some young people share that online shopping is completely suitable for the limited time they have left after a long busy day at work.

Regarding this point of view, Linh and Trang said that shopping “online” or “offline” both have their own conveniences. Both of them still take advantage of the convenience of hunting for sales online but mainly buy clothes and cosmetics. For food and household items, young girls often choose to buy directly at traditional markets, convenience stores or supermarkets.

Ms. Linh affirmed: "The prices at the market are not much different from online shopping platforms if you buy from reputable places or from your acquaintances."

According to some experts, traditional markets have their own strengths such as: diverse products, lifestyle of some consumers, beautiful culture that cannot be completely replaced by other shopping channels; strong enough to "compete" with e-commerce platforms.

However, in reality, traditional markets are gradually losing their appeal to consumers, especially young people. To adapt to changes in consumer shopping habits, it is thought that markets need to proactively upgrade and innovate.

The traditional market model needs to combine and take advantage of advantages that e-commerce platforms find difficult to penetrate; diversify products, prices and sales costs to take advantage of all market segments. At the same time, it should attract customers with unique values of this type of market.
