With great potential for rice production, Thanh Hoa's agricultural sector not only focuses on stabilizing the area but also on producing clean rice; strictly controlling pesticide residues to reduce emissions, production costs and increase income for people.
In the concentrated rice production field, in the spring crop of 2025, people in Xuan Minh commune (Tho Xuan) planted 215 hectares of rice. Of which, rice is produced in an organic direction with the main varieties TBR225 and Bac Thom No. 7 KBL with an area of 80 hectares. These are rice varieties suitable for local soil, have good resistance to pests and diseases, and give high yield, quality and efficiency. On the same area, to form a raw material area for OCOP products, from the spring crop of 2022, Xuan Minh Agricultural Service and Rural Development Cooperative has coordinated with a number of households to participate in the production chain, planting 10 hectares of rice in a concentrated area according to VietGAP standards. Up to now, this area has been expanded to 40 hectares and an additional 10 hectares of organic production.
According to Ms. Do Thi Hoa, director of the cooperative: “With the goal of producing clean, high-quality rice to supply the domestic and foreign markets, aiming for export, all production processes from seed selection, fertilization, and pest control strictly follow technical procedures. We use organic fertilizers, do not use pesticides and nitrogen fertilizers, and apply synchronous mechanization from soil preparation, tray seeding, transplanting machines, harvesting to processing, packaging, and post-harvest preservation. With the organic production area, the “5 no’s” will be applied, which has limited the situation of pesticide bottles being thrown away in the fields; people’s awareness of following the rice care process has been raised.”
"Although organic production makes rice grow more slowly, the products that reach consumers are slender, long, bright white rice grains with a light aroma. When cooked, they give off a natural aroma, and the rice is sweet and sticky..." - Ms. Hoa added. Currently, the Hoa Minh rice brand is known to many consumers. Each crop, the cooperative sells more than 100 tons of rice, supplying to a number of schools in the district and markets in provinces such as Nghe An, Ha Tinh, etc.
Currently, the whole province has developed and expanded the area of rice produced in the direction of organic, VietGAP and many areas have been certified in the districts of Thieu Hoa, Trieu Son, Yen Dinh, Tho Xuan, Nong Cong... Many enterprises such as Bac Trung Bo Joint Stock Company, Thai Binh Seed Group Company, Tam Phu Hung High-tech Food Company Limited... have cooperated in production and product consumption. Also from that premise, many OCOP products have been known to consumers such as Tien Son Ha Linh sticky rice with areca nut, Gia Mieu Ngoai Trang golden sticky rice, Tien Son No. 3 rice, Van Dai rice, Hoa Minh rice, Ngoc Trai rice...
At the VietGAP rice production field in Quang Hoa commune (Quang Xuong), farmer Nguyen Van Son said: “Rice production according to VietGAP standards has shown clear results compared to traditional production fields in the past. We were instructed by technical staff to apply intensive farming measures using high-yield, high-quality rice varieties, concentrated planting, balanced fertilization so that the rice plants are strong and the fields are airy... At the same time, we keep a diary, record the time of using pesticides, wear protective clothing to protect our health... Thanks to that, the number of times pesticides are sprayed is reduced, production costs are reduced by 25 - 30% compared to traditional farming”. Participating in the linkage of rice production according to VietGAP standards, people have become more aware of collecting packaging and pesticide bottles in the right places, contributing to protecting the ecological environment.
Currently, Quang Xuong district has formed a high-quality rice production area of more than 800 hectares in the communes of Quang Van, Quang Hoa, Quang Hop, Quang Ngoc, Quang Nhan, Quang Long, Quang Yen... meeting quality standards and widely consumed.
It can be affirmed that, with the increasingly high demands of the market, the increasingly strict regulations of importing countries, requiring improved rice quality, expanding the production area of VietGAP, organic... to create clean, high-quality rice grains associated with environmental protection is an inevitable trend. Although the initial investment capital is higher than conventional production, the production techniques are also more difficult, but it has contributed to creating safe rice products, beneficial to the health of consumers. At the same time, it contributes to raising awareness, changing the farming methods of people in sustainable agricultural production, reducing labor, increasing the value of crops, protecting the environment, the field ecosystem, suitable for climate change adaptation.
