Green living from awareness

In order to make environmental protection deeply ingrained in the awareness and become a regular action of each resident in the residential area, the Sa Pa parish residential group of Sa Pa town (Lao Cai) has focused on promoting propaganda and mobilizing people to actively participate in activities and ceremonies incorporating legal regulations on environmental protection; building conventions and village covenants for parishioners to implement. Every year, the residential group organizes for parishioners to sign a commitment to protect the environment.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, Vice Chairman of the Sa Pa Parish Council, said that up to now, the work of maintaining environmental sanitation on village roads, alleys, and protecting the landscape around the church has been carried out very seriously by parishioners in Sa Pa town and has become a voluntary task of each person. Parishioners living in Sa Pa town always throw garbage in the right place, and are more responsible for protecting the living environment of their own families and the area around them. Every week, every month, when the town, wards or churches organize cleaning of village roads, alleys, dredging canals, trimming weeds along the roads, etc., parishioners are very enthusiastic in responding.

Sa Pa parishioners and the government join hands for a green - clean - beautiful environment.

"Since the beginning of the year, the Church has mobilized parishioners to carry out 5 environmental sanitation campaigns. Currently, most parishioner households have access to clean water; basically, parishioner households raise livestock in a clean environment. Families have raised awareness of cleaning their houses and gardens, participating in planting trees and flowers to create beautiful landscapes; barns are cleaned regularly," said Mr. Hai.

Mr. Pham Minh Hung, a parishioner living in Cau May ward, Sa Pa town, shared: “In the past, people had the habit of burning garbage, causing environmental pollution. We encouraged people to collect, classify and pay money for the environmental company to collect garbage at the collection points. In our belief, our body is where God resides, the body is the temple, we must protect the living environment, protect our health and the community. When the environment is clean, our health will improve, and a healthy body will please God.”

Living responsibly with the environment

Sa Pa Parish is one of the parishes with the largest number of parishioners in Lao Cai province. According to the report, Sa Pa town currently has 1 parish, 3 quasi-parishes and 15 mission stations with a total of about 5,500 parishioners, the majority of whom are ethnic minorities.

Every quarter, every month, Saturday or Sunday, the parishes mobilize parishioners to pick up trash, clean up their family's area, surrounding roads, villages, and around the church at 3 parishes to respond to the movements "Green Sunday", "Volunteer Saturday"...

Mr. Giang A Cho, a parishioner living in Sa Pa commune, Sa Pa town, said that the living environment is currently being seriously threatened, especially because of the problem of garbage, polluted air, food and drinks containing toxic chemicals, unclean water sources... causing illness for many people.

“My friends and I understand the harmful effects of garbage on the environment. Therefore, everyone is very enthusiastic about participating in community activities, cleaning and picking up trash. I personally think that this activity is very meaningful and helps the environment in Sa Pa in particular and Lao Cai in general to be greener, cleaner and brighter...”, Mr. Cho confided.

Talking to us, Mr. Giang Seo Sang, an official of the People's Committee of Sa Pa commune, Sa Pa town, affirmed that Sa Pa parishioners are one of the bright spots of the Campaign "All people unite to build new rural areas and civilized urban areas". They always strive to "live a good life, good religion", promote the spirit of solidarity, and help each other in economic development, actively respond to emulation movements, enthusiastically participate in environmental protection, landscape preservation, and join hands in building new rural areas...

Living green, blending in with nature, being environmentally friendly, and taking responsibility for a sustainable environment have become the daily messages of parishioners in Sa Pa parish. The parish always calls on parishioners to... clean up the environment, sort trash, and plant more trees at home and in churches.

“In the coming time, the parish will continue to mobilize parishioners to actively participate in the Green Sunday movement, volunteer Saturday or joint environmental protection plans launched by Sa Pa town,” said Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, Vice Chairman of the Sa Pa Parish Council.
