Although a series of supermarkets and stores in Ho Chi Minh City are applying strong discount programs for confectionery, beer, soft drinks and Tet food products, purchasing power still does not meet expectations.

Despite the 10% to 50% discount on Tet confectionery, consumers are still cautious about spending, focusing only on deeply discounted items in the affordable segment.
Great promotion for Tet
Currently, many supermarkets and online sales channels in Ho Chi Minh City such as Co.opmart, Emart, Bach Hoa Xanh, MM Mega Market... are implementing a series of promotional programs for confectionery, soft drinks and beer to attract purchasing power at the end of the year.
Many big brands such as Kinh Do, Bibica, and Orion are offering discounts of 10-30%. For example, Kinh Do's Loc gift box has been reduced from VND125,000 to VND112,000, while Orion Custas 276g has been reduced from VND62,500 to VND47,500. Other products such as Tortitas have also been reduced from VND101,000 to VND90,000/box.
Many soft drinks are significantly discounted, such as strawberry Sting from VND265,000 to VND188,000/carton, Rockstar and Redbull energy drinks are both priced at VND208,000/carton of 24 cans (down from VND279,000). Deedo Fruitku melon juice is nearly halved, from VND290,000 to VND149,000/carton. Customers also receive additional gifts such as handbags and thermoses when buying in bulk.
Major beer brands such as Heineken, Tiger, and Saigon have all reduced prices by VND10,000 - VND20,000 per crate. Specifically, Heineken beer is now VND435,000 - VND455,000 per crate, Tiger is VND260,000 - VND370,000 per crate, and Saigon beer is VND250,000 - VND330,000 per crate.
Not only candies and soft drinks, many processed foods are also being heavily discounted. Co.op Select mai que lo sausage is reduced from 113,500 VND to 104,000 VND/500g box, shrimp sausage from 145,000 VND to 129,000 VND. Vissan Company said that products such as ham, sausage, and sausage are all reduced by 10-30%.
Consumers prioritize discounted goods when shopping for Tet
Although purchasing power increases in the days leading up to Tet, many consumers still tighten spending, prioritizing products with deep discounts, especially confectionery and essential foods.
At Co.opmart Chu Van An supermarket (Binh Thanh district), the confectionery and processed food section is quite crowded, while the beer and beverage section is deserted despite many promotional programs. Ms. Nguyen Bich Thao, a customer, said she chose to buy 10 boxes of confectionery from the Kinh Do and Orion brands because of the preferential prices. However, she still considered not to overspend:
"This year is difficult, I only choose items that I really need and are on deep promotion. If I don't have enough, it's not too late to buy more during Tet," she shared.
In contrast to non-promotional products, consumers look to buy them online or in online markets. Ms. Phung Bich Lien (Thu Duc City) chose to buy watermelon and pumpkin seeds online at prices 20-30% cheaper than in supermarkets. She said:
"I buy items that are not on sale at the supermarket online to save money.
Many people think that shopping online is also the best way at this time. Channels such as Bach Hoa Xanh, Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok Shop are offering 30-50% discounts on many Tet products such as candy, beer, soft drinks, and free shipping, helping customers save more when shopping.
Sellers worry about Tet inventory
Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich, a grocery store owner in Binh Thanh district, said:
"This year I imported more than 200 cases of beer and soft drinks, 100 cases less than previous years, but currently I have only sold about 40%. If purchasing power does not increase during the next 5 peak days, the risk of unsold goods is very high."
The profit from each case of beer and soft drinks is only about 10,000 - 20,000 VND, causing dealers to import goods sparingly even though it is the peak season. Some places are even offering deep discounts, which was rare in previous years.
Mr. Nguyen Dang Hien, general director of Bidrico, said the company has increased discounts to encourage agents to import goods, but purchasing power has still decreased compared to previous years. He explained:
"The economy is in trouble and consumer trends are changing, people prefer more nutritious drinks. The use of beer and soft drinks as Tet gifts has also decreased."
Representatives of large supermarkets such as Co.opmart, Emart, and Lotte Mart confirmed that purchasing power has increased, focusing on confectionery, soft drinks, and beer, but the increase is only about 10% and mainly in the popular, deeply discounted product group.
MM Mega Market also said that beer and soft drinks, despite strong price reductions, have not met expectations, reflecting the cautious sentiment of consumers this year.
Supermarkets promote essential goods
Many large supermarkets are increasing promotions to stimulate demand during Tet. Emart representatives said that discounts of up to 70% and "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" programs are being applied to confectionery, jams, household goods, and fresh food.
Central Group is launching a "Pork Festival" at GO!, Big C, Tops Market systems nationwide until January 22, with 20% - 45% discounts on products such as pork belly, ham, pig's feet...
LOTTE Mart also increases and reduces prices until January 28 for meat, vegetables, eggs and processed foods such as ham, banh chung, with vouchers for loyal customers.
Saigon Co.op reduces 30,000 - 150,000 VND/Tet gift basket, with the price reduced from 200,000 - 1.5 million VND, meeting consumers' gift needs.
