(Dan Tri) - Many types of candy, fast food such as sausages, milk tea, dried potatoes... still in their original packaging are piled up at the landfill in the "capital" of La Phu, Hoai Duc, Hanoi.
For many days now, at the spontaneous garbage dump near the railway in La Phu commune, Hoai Duc district, Hanoi, a large amount of candy and fast food has been dumped in piles, even though they are still stored in boxes or plastic bags.
According to the reporter, on the afternoon of February 5, garbage and cakes and candies spilled onto the street, affecting traffic. Many candy and cake packages were opened and mixed with household waste, emitting a foul smell, attracting flies from everywhere.
Most of the cakes and candies dumped here have no signs of use. There are also fast foods such as chicken feet, chicken thighs, sausages, dried potatoes and candies that are popular with children.
Many expired products or imitations of famous cake brands are scattered everywhere. The packaging of many types of cakes, candies, and fast foods are printed in foreign languages, not in Vietnamese.
Near the landfill area, many vehicles with foreign license plates are still busy unloading goods. On the road next to the landfill, three-wheeled vehicles and cargo trucks are still coming and going, their vehicles are full of boxes of candy, many of which are printed with foreign words.
Notably, right at this landfill, the People's Committee of La Phu commune has erected a sign prohibiting dumping of garbage and waste, citing the Government's regulations and decrees on administrative violations in the field of environmental protection.
However, despite the no-dumping sign, people still pile up trash right in front of the sign and around this area.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa (worker of Thanh Cong environmental cooperative) said that a large amount of candy and fast food appeared at the landfill before the Lunar New Year 2025.
"At the end of the year, the units clean up their factories, so they dump out a large amount of production waste and leftover candy. The cooperative's trucks only transport household waste, not production waste because they can't handle it all," said Ms. Hoa.
According to Ms. Hoa, the amount of candy and food that has been left for many days without being delivered has made the workers' work harder. Many of the products are greasy and sweet, attracting flies and mosquitoes, affecting the living environment.
"In previous years, there was also a situation of throwing away candy at the landfill, but not as much as this year," said Ms. Hoa.
Mr. D., a nearby resident, said that La Phu has many families and factories that produce confectionery or import confectionery from other places for packaging.
"This could be expired goods that were thrown away or units that had no need to buy, sell or consume them so they dumped them in the landfill," said Mr. D.
Regarding this issue, speaking with Dan Tri reporter, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tien, Vice Chairman of La Phu Commune People's Committee, said that he had grasped the situation of candy dumped at the landfill in recent days and had assigned the department in charge to handle it to ensure environmental sanitation for the area.
According to Mr. Tien, the locality has two main industries: confectionery production and wool weaving. Preliminary statistics show that there are about 200 establishments producing and trading food, confectionery and knitting, so the amount of waste discharged into the environment is not small, and during Tet, the waste is dumped even more.
The locality has also arranged a landfill area far from residential areas and erected no-dumping signs near the railway, but still cannot control it all because the amount of garbage people dump is too large.
Regarding the origin of the cakes, candies and food with intact packaging and boxes, Mr. Tien said that it could not be confirmed that they were completely dumped by La Phu residents because the landfill is near the border with other communes and wards.
"We will soon handle the remaining waste to prevent environmental pollution, and report to the District People's Committee and Hanoi City on this issue," said Mr. Tien.
