On the morning of October 7, the 2023 Hanoi Open Dragon Boat Racing Tournament took place excitingly on West Lake (the lake surface area of Thanh Nien Street and Nguyen Dinh Thi Street).
This is an activity to celebrate the 69th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2023) and is also an activity within the cooperation agreement on culture, sports and tourism development between the Hanoi People's Committee and Vietnam Airlines Corporation. The tournament attracted the attention of thousands of people and tourists on the banks of West Lake.
This year's tournament attracted over 600 athletes from 40 boat teams from 36 units, from districts of the capital, neighboring provinces and cities, organizations, businesses, embassies, alumni associations, and international organizations in Hanoi.
The tournament is divided into 5 competition categories in the main contents: Men's and women's combined competition of provincial and city boat teams in the country; men's boat competition of Hanoi district groups; women's boat competition of Hanoi district groups; men's and women's combined boat competition of teams from embassies and international organizations in Vietnam; men's and women's combined boat competition of teams from foreign clubs, organizations, businesses and airlines.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports Do Dinh Hong said that the Dragon Boat Rowing movement has developed strongly in the capital and provinces and cities across the country, especially in areas with many rivers and lakes. This sport is part of the plan of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to restore and promote sports with the cultural identity of the Vietnamese people.

Since 2018, the Hanoi People's Committee has directed the Department of Culture and Sports, People's Committees of districts, towns, agencies and organizations in the city to develop plans, organize training and competitions.
Through 4 previous events, the Dragon Boat Race has become a familiar playground, awaited by boat racing enthusiasts, thereby attracting many international and domestic organizations to choose, forming the habit of practicing and playing Dragon Boat rowing to improve health at West Lake. In districts, the movement of practicing and competing in Dragon Boat at local festivals and events is increasingly developing.
At this year's tournament, responding to the movement to clean the capital's environment and reduce plastic waste, the Organizing Committee has promoted, encouraged and requested athletes, referees, residents and visitors to maintain environmental hygiene and reduce the use of disposable plastic products.
With the annual Dragon Boat Race, Hanoi aims to create a unique sports tourism product, attracting domestic and foreign tourists to participate. The tournament takes place in one day. At the end of the tournament, the Organizing Committee will award prizes to the teams with high achievements.
