World gold price developments in the past 24 hours.
Gold prices have surged to a new record high, as investors seek safe-haven assets ahead of US President Donald Trump's expected announcement of broad tariffs on countries with trade surpluses with the US.
Spot gold rose 0.3% to $3,132.43 an ounce by 11:07 a.m. ET (1507 GMT), after hitting an all-time high of $3,148.88 earlier in the day. U.S. gold futures rose 0.4% to $3,164.20.
“As long as we see weakness in US equity markets and continued concerns about tariffs and geopolitical developments, gold is likely to continue to move higher,” said Marex analyst Edward Meir.
Markets and consumers are awaiting details of Mr. Trump’s proposed tariffs, which are expected to be announced on Wednesday. The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that White House aides have drafted plans to impose tariffs of about 20% on most U.S. imports.
“We’re likely to see a slight correction tomorrow when the announcement comes out,” said Meir, adding that gold is likely to bounce back as uncertainty continues around Trump’s tariffs.
Gold, traditionally seen as a hedge against geopolitical and economic turmoil, closed out its strongest quarter since 1986 on Monday, surpassing $3,100 an ounce, marking one of the most significant price gains in the precious metal's history.
Goldman Sachs on Monday raised the probability of a U.S. recession to 35% from 20%, and said it expects more rate cuts from the Federal Reserve. Non-yielding bullion will thrive in a low-interest-rate environment.
“We continue to see gold prices moving higher,” said Ryan McIntyre, senior portfolio manager at Sprott Asset Management, partly due to increased holdings in physical gold-backed ETFs and strong central bank buying.
Technically, gold's Relative Strength Index (RSI) is above 70, indicating the metal is overbought.
Job openings fell to 7.568 million at the end of February, compared with economists' expectations of 7.616 million, according to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics. Investors are also awaiting Friday's nonfarm payrolls report for further clues on the Fed's path to rate cuts.
Silver fell 0.3% to $33.97 an ounce, platinum fell 0.5% to $987.30. Palladium rose 0.5% to $987.68.
