Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for October 2025 delivery fell 21 yuan to 3,235 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures edged lower after US President Donald Trump announced a series of reciprocal tariffs, although seasonal demand for the steelmaking raw material helped cushion the fall.
The most-traded iron ore contract for May delivery on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 0.2% to 789.5 yuan ($108.12) a tonne.
Benchmark iron ore for May delivery (SZZFK5) on the Singapore Exchange fell 0.79% to $102 a tonne.
US tariffs are stronger than expected and that will put pressure on the iron market, brokerage Galaxy Futures said in a note.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced a minimum 10% tariff on most goods imported into the US, with much higher tariffs on products from dozens of countries, escalating a trade war that threatens to fuel inflation and stall economic growth in the US and around the world. Chinese imports will be taxed 34%, bringing the total new tariff to 54%.
On Thursday, Beijing urged the United States to immediately cancel the latest tariffs and said it would take countermeasures to protect its own interests. However, steelmakers ramped up production during the peak construction season in March and April, cushioning the price decline.
"China's import iron ore demand is expected to remain strong in April, as the recovery in steel consumption... will encourage steelmakers to further increase their hot metal output," consultancy Mysteel said in a note.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE fell, with metallurgical coal and coking coal DCJcv1 down 0.6 and 0.31%, respectively.
Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange posted losses. Rebar fell 0.03 percent, hot-rolled coil fell 0.33 percent, stainless steel fell 1 percent, while wire rod (SWRcv1) edged up 0.24 percent.
