Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for June 2025 delivery fell 17 yuan to 3,333 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures fell to their lowest in nearly two months on Friday and fell for the week, weighed down by weakness in China’s property sector, stronger supplies and a bearish outlook for seasonal steel demand.
The most-traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) DCIOcv1 fell 3.09% to 736.0 yuan ($101.80) a tonne, its lowest since Sept. 27. Prices have fallen 6.18% this week.
Benchmark December iron ore SZZFZ4 on the Singapore Exchange fell 1.7% to $96.60 a tonne, down 4.18% for the week.
China's new home prices fell the most in October from a year earlier, while property investment fell 10.3% in the first 10 months of 2024, suggesting Beijing's support measures for the sector have had little impact so far.
In addition, a sharp increase of 2.17 million tonnes of iron ore shipments from Australia and an increase of 2.31 million tonnes of iron ore from China in the week ending November 10 will weaken prices and futures, said Atilla Widnell, CEO at Navigate Commodities.
“At the same time, we expect Chinese blast furnace activity to continue to slow over China’s winter months in response to the sharp drop in construction steel demand,” Widnell said.
Seasonal slowdown in construction activity amid colder weather across China is weighing on steel demand, with work at construction sites slowing or stopping in northern regions, Chinese consultancy Mysteel said in a note.
However, in some southern areas less affected by the climate, local contractors are speeding up construction to meet the year-end deadline, Mysteel said.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE lost momentum, with coking coal DJMcv1 and coke DCJcv1 down 1.29% and 1.01%, respectively.
Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange also fell. Rebar SRBcv1 fell about 2.8%, hot-rolled coil SHHCcv1 fell about 2.2%, wire rod SWRcv1 fell 0.36%, and stainless steel SHSScv1 fell nearly 0.5%.
