Foreign exchange price on February 2, 2025: USD reversed and decreased slightly

The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback's strength against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), recorded 108.01 - down 0.34 points from February 4, 2025.

The dollar fell slightly on Tuesday as investors viewed President Donald Trump’s tariff threats as more of a negotiating tactic than a real goal, after he announced a suspension of tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada.

However, the Trump administration implemented an additional 10% tariff on goods imported from China early Tuesday morning, leading currency analysts to predict further volatility given the market's sensitivity to tariff policies.

The U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major currencies, fell 0.56% to 107.97. Meanwhile, the Canadian dollar weakened while the Mexican peso gained.

"We are still watching the 10% tariff on China and Beijing's response, which could add to market risk," said Helen Given, foreign exchange trader at Monex USA. "We will wait for further developments in negotiations to assess the possibility of a mitigation, as we have seen with Mexico and Canada. But for now, trade tensions with China are rising again."

The euro edged up slightly after Washington warned that the European Union could be the next target of its trade tariffs, a move that could push U.S. inflation higher and help keep interest rates high for longer.

Beijing retaliated on Tuesday by imposing tariffs on some US imports, escalating tensions in the trade war between the world's two largest economies.

"This suggests that China is trying to avoid overreacting to the Trump administration's new tariffs and is still leaving the door open for future negotiations," said Lee Hardman, senior currency analyst at MUFG.

China's yuan rose 0.23 percent to trade at 7.287 per dollar on the offshore market. There was no official trading of the yuan onshore as mainland markets remained closed for the Lunar New Year holiday.

The Australian dollar, often seen as a liquid proxy for the yuan due to the Australian economy's close links to China, rose 0.5% to $0.626, rebounding sharply from Monday's low of $0.6085 - its weakest since April 2020.
