Thai rice export prices fell to a 14-month low this week due to pressure from weak demand and competition from other rice exporters, while Indian rates edged up.

Thailand's 5% broken rice was quoted at $560 a tonne, the lowest since July 20, 2023 and down from $565 last week.

Indonesia has demand for rice, but it imports rice from other exporters at lower prices, a Bangkok-based trader said, adding that the rise in the Thai baht has also reduced the competitiveness of Thai rice.

Top exporter India’s 5% broken parboiled variety was quoted at $536 a tonne this week, up from $534 last week, the lowest since mid-January 2024. “A strong rupee is pushing up prices, but demand remains sluggish. Buyers are holding off in hopes of India cutting export duties,” a Mumbai-based trader said.

Vietnam’s 5% broken rice was offered at $565 a tonne on September 26, also down from around $580 last week, according to the Vietnam Food Association. The decline was due to competition from other suppliers such as Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar, according to a Ho Chi Minh City-based trader.
