In the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam's coffee exports are estimated to reach around US$2.8 billion, according to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa). If this price remains stable in the remaining three quarters, the entire year's export turnover could reach a record US$8 billion.

The main reason for this surge is the sharp increase in coffee export prices. Compared to the first quarter of 2024, the average coffee price has increased by 73%, from 3,228 USD/ton to 5,614 USD/ton. For many years, Vietnam's coffee export price has been around 2,000 USD/ton, but since the beginning of 2024, the price has continuously increased, even increasing very rapidly at times.

In the first half of March 2025, Vietnam's average export coffee price reached 5,798 USD/ton. With this trend, the price of 6,000 USD/ton is completely achievable in the near future.

In the domestic market, Robusta coffee prices are also at record highs. Previously, farmers in the Central Highlands could only sell coffee for about VND40 million per ton. Currently, this figure has reached about VND134 million per ton, an increase of nearly 3.5 times in two years.

Coffee prices have also increased sharply due to concerns about new tax policies from the US. Although there are currently no taxes on coffee from the Americas, US traders are increasing imports to avoid being affected if the tax increases in the future. According to the National Coffee Association (NCA), if the US really imposes high taxes on coffee from Brazil or other North American countries, coffee prices in the US market will increase even more sharply.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market fell sharply on both exchanges:

Robusta Coffee (London):

Delivery in May 2025: Down 73 USD/ton, to 5,293 USD/ton.

Delivery in July 2025: Down 79 USD/ton, to 5,321 USD/ton.

Arabica Coffee (New York):

May 2025 delivery: Down 6.9 cents/lb, to 381.95 cents/lb.

July 2025 delivery: Down 6.9 cents/lb, to 378.5 cents/lb.

The New York coffee market is expected to remain volatile until mid-month, partly due to the near-expiration of contracts and partly due to uncertainty over the US announcement of new tariffs. In this context, the US dollar is likely to weaken while the Brazilian real is likely to strengthen, also affecting the global coffee market.

In addition, the weather in Brazil remains the focus. Although there has been some rain, it is not enough to ensure the upcoming crop. Organizations such as Cooxupé and Marex have forecast that this year's coffee production in Brazil may not exceed last year's average crop. Rabobank, after a field survey, is also considering revising its production forecast downward.

Despite the high coffee prices, many experts warn that demand could decline if retail prices continue to rise. As roasters work through their low-priced inventory, consumers could become more cautious about the new prices, affecting overall purchasing power.
