Hundreds of kiosks at Ha Tinh City Market are facing a serious slump and have had to close, put up signs for rent or sell their stalls due to the boom in online shopping, while small traders are struggling to find ways to maintain their jobs.
Clip: Nearly 200 kiosks at Ha Tinh City market closed due to the boom of online shopping.
Ha Tinh City Market used to be a bustling place, the main trading place for products such as clothes, shoes and many other items. However, in the past year, the situation of small traders leaving their stalls and kiosks empty has become common.
The main reason for this situation is the explosion of online shopping, the development of shopping malls and modern fashion chains. Traditional markets no longer have a monopoly and can hardly compete on price.
Hundreds of kiosks closed due to poor business.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu (a clothing vendor at Ha Tinh City Market) shared: "In recent years, our sales have been getting worse and worse, having to compete with online shops. Few customers come, many shops are not open, there are no customers. Tax, electricity and vehicle money are not enough. Some days there are only 5-7 customers, some days there are even no customers. I am thinking about changing to another job."
According to a vendor at the market, he had to transfer his kiosk and change jobs to support his family. Almost all kiosk owners have quit or switched to online sales, many of whom are elderly, so it is difficult to find other jobs.
Ha Tinh City Market currently has about 1,800 kiosks, but about 180 are vacant (mostly clothing kiosks on the second floor). Many vendors are forced to hang signs for rent or sell their stalls, but still cannot find tenants.
Although the Ha Tinh City Market Management Board has tried to promote the change of business form for small traders to switch to online sales, this is difficult for the elderly, online sales require skills and quickness that not everyone can do.
Mr. Tran Xuan Cuong - Ha Tinh City Market Manager said: "Business at the city market is very sluggish, about 180 vendors were forced to close their kiosks. Many vendors after closing their kiosks hung up signs for rent, but no one rented them. We have encouraged vendors to switch to online sales, but for the elderly, this job is very difficult."
