The report did not give details of the investigation or when it took place, but said that several key subsidiaries of the Taiwanese company were suspected of violating financial laws, as well as land use regulations in Henan and Hubei provinces.

The Global Times quoted Zhang Wensheng, deputy director of the Institute of Taiwan Studies at Xiamen University, as saying that land use audit and investigation is a common procedure for any enterprise suspected of violating laws and regulations in China.

Foxconn is Apple's largest contract manufacturer and China is also home to the company's world-largest iPhone factory.

News of Foxconn's investigation comes just days after Apple CEO Tim Cook made a surprise visit to the mainland for the second time this year.

Previously, in September, Beijing expanded restrictions on the use of Apple iPhones for state employees, requiring civil servants at some central agencies to stop using this smartphone model at work.

During his visit to China, the head of the world's largest technology company met and worked with top Beijing officials, including Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang and Minister of Information Technology Jin Zhuanglong.

During the meetings, Apple CEO affirmed that he will continue to support supply chain partners in China and commit to building a better ecosystem for local developers. However, Tim Cook and Beijing did not mention the new regulation that applications released in the mainland (including on the App Store) must obtain permission from the government.

Data from Counterpoint Research shows that iPhone 15 sales in the first 17 days of its launch in China fell 4.5% compared to the iPhone 14.
