Billiard player Bao Phuong Vinh had a good start in defending his title when he defeated Japanese player Miyashita in the opening match of the 2024 World Carom Billiards 3-Cushion Championship which started today in Binh Thuan.
As scheduled, the most prestigious 3-Cushion Carom Billiards tournament of the UMB World Billiards Federation was held in Binh Thuan. This is the first time that Vietnam has been trusted by UMB to organize the tournament with the highest bonus points in the world.
The tournament has 48 of the world's top players, divided into 16 groups, each group has 3 players competing in a round robin, selecting the top 2 players in each group to enter the round of 32 for a direct elimination match.
Because this year is held at home, Vietnam has 7 players participating - a record number ever. Of which, Tran Quyet Chien (world rank 2) and Bao Phuong Vinh (world rank 3) are among the 17 players with the best rankings in the world. Two players Tran Thanh Luc and Nguyen Van Tai received slots from the Asian Billiards Federation. Two players Le Thanh Tien and Tran Duc Minh received special slots from the host country. In the case of Chiem Hong Thai, because a player withdrew at the last minute, he was promoted to replace him.
After making a name for himself in the Vietnamese Billiards community last year when he won the world championship for the first time, Bao Phuong Vinh is trying to defend his title in order to avoid losing points in the world rankings. Seeded in Group A, Bao Phuong Vinh started the match against Miyashita (Japan). With the support of the home crowd, Bao played quite well when he made a series of 10 points to take the lead 19/13. Immediately after that, Bao Phuong Vinh continued to have another series of 10 points to widen the gap to 32/20 and then won with a score of 40-33 after 24 rounds.
Because Miyashita beat the remaining player in the group, Awwad Naser (Jordan), 40-25 after 34 rounds, Bao Phuong Vinh is almost certain to get a ticket to the next round. Because in the remaining match tomorrow, if Bao Phuong Vinh loses to Awwad Naser, the chance of winning 1 of the 2 tickets in group A is very high. Because he has a much higher secondary index than the two opponents in the group.
Similarly, that is the case of the current runner-up Tran Quyet Chien and the World Cup champion Tran Duc Minh. In group B, Tran Quyet Chien defeated Morales (Colombia) 40-30 in the opening match. Since Morales defeated Kokkoris (Greece) 40-39, so in tomorrow's match, even if Tran Quyet Chien loses to Kokkoris, the chance to enter is still very high. Meanwhile, in group F, Tran Duc Minh defeated Martin Horn (Germany) 40-17 in the match that just ended at 10:30 p.m. tonight. Since Martin Horn defeated the remaining player in the group Lindemann (Germany) 40-19, so in the remaining match tomorrow, Tran Duc Minh with a fairly high index will have a much greater advantage over his opponent Lindemann.
Today is considered a successful day for the Vietnamese players when the remaining players all have positive results. With a victory over Orak (Türkiye) 40-27 but losing to world number 1 Dick Jaspers (Netherlands) 37-40 despite leading 29/16, player Chiem Hong Thai also almost holds 1 of the 2 tickets to the next round of group B thanks to a high extra index.
Participating for the first time in the world championship, player Nguyen Van Tai won Karakurt (Türkiye) 40-34 in group P. In the internal battle between two Vietnamese players in group N, Tran Thanh Luc won Le Thanh Tien with a score of 40-35 to create an advantage in the competition for a ticket to the knockout round.
