Many places have a decrease in visitors.

As a destination that depends heavily on weather conditions, Cu Lao Cham (Tan Hiep island commune, Hoi An city) has seen a sharp decline in the number of visitors these days compared to the peak summer season.

Ms. Pham Thi My Huong - Chairwoman of Tan Hiep Commune People's Committee informed that the number of visitors to the island in October is expected to reach about 4 thousand arrivals, a sharp decrease and only about 6% compared to July (the peak month of the summer tourist season, reaching nearly 65 thousand arrivals).

Inland from the city, the Bay Mau coconut forest, although an almost unmissable destination for tourists coming to Hoi An, has also recorded a decrease in visitors.

According to the management board of this destination, from the beginning of October until now, the coconut forest has welcomed an average of 2,500 visitors per day, only about 70% compared to peak times of the year.

At My Son Temple Complex, the number of visitors to this world cultural heritage in the first half of October was about 76% compared to the average number of visitors to My Son in the first 9 months of the year.

This is understandable because the structure of international visitors to My Son accounts for a very large proportion while this time is considered the lowest season for most international visitor markets to Vietnam.

Dong Giang Heaven Gate Eco-tourism Area (Dong Giang District) also began to record a decline in visitors during the rainy season. Photo: QT

The sharp decline in the number of visitors has caused accommodation segments to fall into a difficult situation. According to estimates from the Quang Nam Villas & Homestay Association (Quang Nam Tourism Association), the average occupancy rate of villas and homestays in Hoi An from September to now has only reached less than 30% (in the peak season, it is about 70 - 80%).

Some villas and homestays have had to temporarily close due to lack of guests. Even if there are sporadic bookings, they cannot receive them because they cannot cover operating costs.

Meanwhile, the accommodation area of Dong Giang Heaven Gate Eco-tourism Area (Dong Giang District) has also begun to record a decline in visitors during the rainy season. The average occupancy rate at this time is only 30%, except for the occasion of October 20, when it is estimated to reach about 60%.

Adapt and increase stimulus

To improve the situation, destinations have recently implemented many stimulus programs as well as some solutions to both attract more visitors in the short term and prepare more thoroughly for the future.

Hoi An City Culture, Sports and Tourism Center has launched a program to provide free tour guides, give vouchers for tickets to visit traditional craft villages to groups of visitors who buy 8 or more tickets to visit the old town, and an additional voucher to experience the Yukata costume wearing service at the Japanese Cultural Exhibition House for groups of 15 or more people until mid-November 2024.

My Son Temple Complex has launched a contest called “My Son Tourism Review” with many valuable prizes as well as launched an online ticket sales website to increase convenience for visitors wishing to visit this heritage.

Some prominent private destinations also launched many attractive stimulus packages. Vinwonders Nam Hoi An (Thang Binh district) applied a ticket discount program to thank customers in 5 provinces and cities of Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Kon Tum from September to the end of November.

In addition, there is also an animal discovery tour at River Safari with a preferential price of 120,000 VND/ticket for students. Meanwhile, Dong Giang Heaven Gate Eco-tourism Area (Dong Giang district) is applying a "golden autumn" stimulus package with only 499,000 VND/person until the end of 2024, including entrance tickets, accommodation, dinner as well as experiencing the services that have just been put into operation at this destination...

Particularly in Cu Lao Cham, due to the nature of sea and island tourism being greatly affected by unfavorable weather, households doing business in the service and tourism sector have also proactively adapted to the rough sea season.

Ms. Pham Thi My Huong said that many motorbike taxi drivers belonging to Cu Lao Cham Cooperative have switched to exploiting seafood; households exploiting forest leaves or processing dried squid are proactively exploiting to store for next year's tourist season or selling to organizations and individuals in need through online trading; restaurants and homestays are taking the opportunity to renovate their facilities, improve service quality, especially upgrading the application of information technology to make it convenient for guests to book rooms...
