From being just a transit point and a temporary stopover, Da Nang has gradually affirmed its position as a tourist center not only in Vietnam, but also internationally.
Da Nang is located between three world cultural heritages: the ancient capital of Hue, the ancient town of Hoi An, and the My Son Sanctuary. This location turned Da Nang into a "transit point" nearly two decades ago, bringing tourists to tourist destinations.
The Han River City is only a temporary stop for tourists, despite possessing rich natural resources with rivers, mountains, seas, forests; convenient transportation by air, water, road and rail.
Turning point of Da Nang tourism
In the first half of 2007, Da Nang welcomed about 577,400 visitors, the number of days stayed by international visitors was only 1.67 days, domestic visitors only 1.62 days. The average daily expenditure of a domestic visitor was only 470,000 VND, international visitors was 50 USD. The reason for these modest figures is the lack of diversity in tourism products.
The Da Nang government at that time was determined to make a "revolution" in tourism products, by "rolling out the red carpet" to attract investors. In 2007, in response to that aspiration, many enthusiastic investors were ready to join hands and put their efforts to put Da Nang on the tourism map. That was also the time that marked the appearance of Sun Group in Vietnam, with the largest project in the Central region at that time - Ba Na Hills.

The top of the cloud mountain was already a tourist destination at that time, but the old accommodation service businesses here only welcomed guests every three summer months. When the season ended, they had to take down blankets, mattresses, televisions, and refrigerators from the mountain. The roads were difficult to travel on... It was not until March 25, 2009, when the first cable car line was put into operation, with a capacity of serving 1,500 guests per hour, that Ba Na truly "awakened".
After more than 16 years, Sun World Ba Na Hills has become a world-class tourist area, the World's Leading Iconic Tourist Destination 2021 (honored by WTA). French Village with ancient castles like a miniature Paris; Le Jardin d'Amour garden area with 10 year-round colorful flower gardens; Fantasy Park indoor entertainment area of 21,000m2; 100-year-old Debay wine cellar from the French colonial period still preserved to this day; the world's most romantic hotel Mercure Danang French Village Bana Hills; Moon Castle or the large-scale Eclipse Square; dozens of classy restaurants; daily art performances, year-round festivals... In particular, the appearance of the Golden Bridge in 2018 contributed to making Da Nang a must-see destination for global tourists.
Ba Na Hills marks the rise, affirming a new position for Da Nang.
"Swimming upstream " thanks to high-class tourism products
After the construction of the first cable car line to the top of Ba Na, major investments have continuously taken place, aiming to supplement Da Nang with quality, classy, and unique tourism products to welcome new opportunities.
In 2017, Da Nang was chosen as the venue for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit Week. InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort was chosen to host heads of state at this important regional event.
Built not long after Ba Na Hills, InterContinental Danang has received the World's Leading Luxury Resort award four times from WTA and many other international awards. That achievement was created by the collaboration between developer Sun Group and famous architect Bill Bensley.

The growth rate of visitors and investment in tourism infrastructure over the past decade has raised the level of tourism in Da Nang. In the period 2008-2018, accommodation facilities in Da Nang increased 5.4 times, especially the number of 3-5 star rooms increased by nearly 22 times. The banks of the Han River are sparkling and luxurious with a series of luxury hotels such as Novotel Danang Premier Han River, along with the presence of world-famous brands: Hilton, Accor, Marriott, Sheraton... My Khe beach is splendid with 4-5 star resorts, such as Premier Village Da Nang Resort - the world's leading family villa resort. Nearly 30 of the world's leading hotel groups are present on Vo Nguyen Giap route connecting Da Nang with Hoi An...
Regarding entertainment, besides Sun World Ba Na Hills, Da Nang also owns a high-class Asian Park. Recently, APEC Park has been invested on a large scale next to the Han River. In 2022, the leading Korean corporation Lotte opened a large-scale duty-free store in Da Nang, adding a high-class shopping destination for residents and tourists.
Regarding urban infrastructure, in order to attract new residents and foreigners to settle down, the city will also welcome the presence of high-quality urban complexes in the Han River area or Nam Hoa Xuan...

To diversify tourism products, Da Nang also treats visitors to a series of festivals all year round, with the brand name of Da Nang International Fireworks Festival, attractive events such as grand music festivals, street carnivals, a series of unique festivals at Ba Na Hills, Asia Park, Da Nang Golf Tourism Festival...
In 2022, surpassing 8 leading destinations, Da Nang was honored for the second time as Asia's Leading Event and Festival Destination.
It can be said that investing in tourism products is a strategic move to change the face of Da Nang. From 2009 to 2018, the number of visitors to the city increased by 463%. In 2019, before the pandemic, Da Nang welcomed 8.6 million visitors, of which 3.5 million were international visitors. In 2022, Da Nang will lead the country in the tourism destination competitiveness index.
In the first half of 2023, Da Nang tourism also showed positive signs of recovery. At the beginning of the peak summer season, with the return of the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival - DIFF 2023, the number of flights to this locality was estimated to reach 150 flights per day, 1.5 times higher than the previous period.

According to statistics, the number of guests staying during the 4 nights of fireworks competition reached nearly 240,000. Of which, international guests were nearly 83,000 and domestic guests were nearly 158,000. The city's hotel room capacity reached about 70%. Da Nang is expected to welcome more than 63,000 guests staying during the final night of the 2023 International Fireworks Festival.
In the second half of the year, when a series of festivals and events continue to hit Da Nang, these numbers promise to grow even more, marking the breakthrough of one of Vietnam's top destinations.
According to experts, the collection of unique, high-class products has helped Da Nang tourism change dramatically. However, investment, innovation, upgrading tourism products, and diversifying experiences for Da Nang tourists still need to continue to be focused on in many subsequent stages of development.
