On the afternoon of August 5, in Hoi An ancient town (Quang Nam), a reenactment of the wedding of Princess Ngoc Hoa and Japanese merchant Araki Sotaro more than 400 years ago took place.

Tourists were overwhelmed and delighted by the "wedding of the century" which is considered the beginning of the friendly and diplomatic relationship between Vietnam and Japan.

Reenactment of the wedding over 400 years ago between a Nguyen Dynasty Princess and a Japanese merchant.

This is one of the activities in the series of events "Hoi An - Japan Cultural Exchange" for the 19th time, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan (1973-2023), and at the same time continuing the exchange and cooperation relationship between Hoi An and Japan.

According to legend, merchant Araki Sotaro was originally a Samurai. In 1588, he came to Nagasaki and started a trading career, gradually becoming the leader of Japanese businessmen.

Around the early 17th century, Araki Sotaro went to Hoi An to do business and won the favor of Lord Nguyen Phuc Nguyen. After that, the Lord gave him a letter confirming that he had voluntarily stayed under the pillow (loyal to the Lord).

In 1619, Lord Nguyen agreed to marry his daughter Princess Ngoc Hoa to Araki Sotaro, with the desire to build a good long-term relationship with Japanese merchants.

In 1620, Princess Ngoc Hoa boarded a boat with her husband Araki Sotaro to live in Nagasaki province of Japan.

This "wedding of the century" is considered the beginning of diplomatic relations and friendship between the two countries Vietnam and Japan.

When she returned to live in Japan, the Princess taught Annamese dances to the Japanese, helped with charity work, built Buddhist temples, and taught cooking and serving to the Japanese.

Thanks to the virtues and precious dignity of Vietnamese women, Princess Ngoc Hoa was loved and respected by the Japanese, affectionately called Anio.

In 1635, after her husband's death, she continued to help many merchants in Nagasaki, promoting good relations with the Nguyen Dynasty court.

The Nagasaki Museum of Art still displays Princess Yuko's mirror. When she died, she was buried at the Daiyin Temple in the center of Nagasaki City.

Today, the procession to welcome Princess Anio (Princess Ngoc Hoa) is recreated in the "Chau An ship" scene, held every seven years at the "Nagasaki Kunchi" festival in Nagasaki.

The marriage story between Princess Ngoc Hoa and merchant Araki Sotaro is considered a bridge of friendship between Vietnam and Japan from the past to the present.

In Hoi An, there is also a street named after Princess Ngoc Hoa running along the Hoai River from the small wooden bridge in front of the Japanese Covered Bridge to the Hoai River Square.

The opera Princess Anio , about a true love story from 400 years ago between a Nguyen Dynasty princess and a Japanese merchant, is expected to be performed at the Hanoi Opera House in September and in Japan in November.
