Bang Son is famous for his essays about the pleasures of life, refined culinary tastes, delicious dishes of Hanoians, and the scenery, history, and culture of this imperial land.

But with A Thousand Seasons of Flowers - his first book published in 1991 - are articles about the Vietnamese countryside, ancient traditional Vietnamese villages.

The book takes readers on a journey to the Vietnamese countryside in the 70s and 80s of the last century with thatched houses, green bamboo gates, hot afternoons with children lying in hammocks creaking in the wind, carrying their dreams far away...

In charming essays, Bang Son tells readers all kinds of rustic stories, from purslane, mixed vegetables lying flat on the ground, drops of thatch in summer rains, rice mortars, straw stubble, straw nests, to the angelic childhood of waiting for mother to come home from the market...

Readers can also experience all the customs and practices of ancient Vietnamese villages, from Tet celebrations in the village, or country weddings with the custom of stringing strings...

After the compact black and white version just released, Vietnam Women Publishing House will soon release a large color version, with many vivid images of the old Vietnamese countryside.
