Parents protest against transferring students from a satellite school to the main school of Quang Phuc Primary School No. 1

On February 11, Mr. Nguyen Tien Thanh - Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Phuc Ward, Ba Don Town, Quang Binh Province - said that the local government has established 6 working groups with more than 40 people, including police, border guards, Women's Union, Veterans Association, Youth Union...

These working groups will go directly to each household to propagate and mobilize parents to agree to ensure that their children return to school after the Lunar New Year holiday.

"For elderly or sick parents, the locality is ready to arrange forces and means to organize transportation for students to the main school to safely study," Mr. Thanh affirmed.

After the Tet holiday, only 1 student out of 154 at Tan My satellite school of Quang Phuc Primary School No. 1 transferred to study at the main school.

Mr. Phan Tien Lam - Principal of Quang Phuc Primary School No. 1 - said that after 8 days of returning to school, only 1 second grade student from Tan My satellite school transferred to the main school. This reflects the hesitation and lack of consensus of many parents.

According to the Quang Phuc ward authorities, the main reason why parents do not agree with the school transfer is because they are afraid of change, worried about the travel distance, and have a habit of sticking with the old school.

Tan My satellite school has degraded and does not ensure safety for teachers and students....

Notably, many residents in Tan My Residential Group also spread unverified information that the government will take the land of Tan My satellite school to "divide and sell plots" in the future...

Mr. Dinh Thieu Son, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Don town, affirmed that the locality has made a written commitment to maintain the status quo of Tan My satellite school. When sufficient financial resources are secured or social investment is received, the government will rebuild the school on the current land for students.

"We do not abandon this school but still plan to use the land fund for education to build schools," Mr. Dinh Thieu Son emphasized.

The remote school is seriously degraded.

Previously, according to the inspection of the Center for Construction Quality Inspection - Quang Binh Department of Construction, the facilities of Tan My satellite school have seriously degraded, no longer ensuring the safety of teaching and learning for teachers and students. Therefore, the People's Committee of Ba Don town decided to temporarily close this school and transfer students to the main school - where the facilities are more complete and modern.

Although this option is considered better in terms of learning conditions, many parents in Tan My still do not agree. The reason is that the main school is about 2km away, which is quite far, making it difficult for parents to pick up and drop off their children, leading to the situation where 154 students at Tan My satellite school do not go to school. The main reason comes from the fear of change, concerns about the travel distance, as well as the habit of sticking with the satellite school.
