Vietnam team falls out of top 100

According to the latest update on the FIFA rankings (February 2024), the Vietnamese team dropped 11 places to 105th place in the world. Previously, the team led by coach Philippe Troussier entered the 2023 Asian Cup with the 94th place in the world in the update last December.

The Vietnamese team was deducted 41 points - the largest deduction on the rankings in this update. The reason for this drop in ranking comes from coach Troussier and his team losing three matches in the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup against Japan, Indonesia and Iraq.

The Vietnamese team left the top 100 after 1,905 days in this group, since November 29, 2018. Not only that, the team lost the number one position in Southeast Asia to Thailand. The Golden Temple team jumped 12 places to 101st place, thanks to impressive achievements at the 2023 Asian Cup.

Thailand currently has 1206.72 points, 12.14 points higher than the Vietnamese team. The last time Thailand ranked number 1 in Southeast Asia on the FIFA rankings was August 2016.

In Asia, the Vietnamese team ranked 19th. The Japanese team still held the number 1 position in Asia but dropped to 18th in the world. The 7 teams ranked right after Japan all increased their rankings. Of which, the reigning Asian Cup champion Qatar rose 21 places to 37th in the world. Runner-up Jordan rose 17 places to 70th in the world.

Argentina is still leading the overall rankings with 1855.2 points. The next positions are France, England, Belgium, Brazil, and the Netherlands.

International matches will return next March. This is an opportunity for teams to improve their positions. The Vietnamese team will face Indonesia twice in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
