Vietnam team makes spectacular breakthrough in FIFA rankings in April: Thanks to 2 wins

The Vietnamese team has accumulated a total of 8.81 points from 2 wins over Cambodia 2-1 (international friendly) and Laos 5-0 in the 3rd qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup on March 25. Of which, the win over Laos was worth 6.09 points because the 2027 Asian Cup qualifying matches are given a higher coefficient, while the win over Cambodia was worth only 2.72 points because it was a friendly match.

This number of points, combined with 10.22 points from the successful AFF Cup 2024 championship campaign with an unbeaten record of 7 wins and 1 draw, has helped the Vietnamese team accumulate a total of 19.03 points since the beginning of the year, to have 1,183.82 points.

Thereby, if calculated from the most recent ranking on the FIFA rankings (end of 2024), in the next time (announced on April 3), the Vietnamese team will increase 5 places from 114th in the world to 109th in the world.

This is a significant step forward for coach Kim Sang-sik and his team, knowing that at one point they lost their way when they fell to 119th place (October 2024) and faced the possibility of falling out of the world's top 120.

However, thanks to focusing again on the AFF Cup 2024 and aiming for a ticket to the Asian Cup 2027, the Vietnamese team has gradually recovered. Up to now, the "Golden Star Warriors" have maintained an unbeaten record since the loss to Thailand (friendly, September 2024), with 9 wins and 2 draws.

However, the real test for coach Kim Sang-sik's team will come in June, when they play away against Malaysia in the second round of Group F in the 2027 Asian Cup third qualifying round.

In this group, the Vietnamese team is leading after beating Laos 5-0, while Malaysia is ranked 2nd after beating Nepal 2-0 thanks to goals from newly naturalized players Hevel and Corbin-Ong. In June, the Malaysian team will have another naturalized player of Brazilian origin, striker Bergson da Silva.

Meanwhile, also in the 3rd qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup, the Thai team only narrowly won against Sri Lanka 1-0 in Group D. It is expected that the "War Elephants" will also drop in the FIFA rankings in April to 99th place from 96th place at the end of 2024. The Indonesian team beat Bahrain 1-0 in the 3rd qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia, and has risen sharply from 130th to 123rd place in the world.
