(Dan Tri) - The heavy 1-5 loss to Australia not only made it difficult for Indonesia to compete for a ticket to the 2026 World Cup but also brought them bad news on the FIFA rankings.
Coach Patrick Kluivert had a disappointing debut for the Indonesian national team when the team lost to Australia with a score of 1-5 in the 7th match of the 3rd qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia at the Sydney Stadium (Australia) on March 20.

Despite having many naturalized players of European origin in the squad, the Indonesian team soon let the host team Australia take a 3-goal lead in the first half. The efforts of coach Patrick Kluivert and his team in the second half only brought them a consolation goal, as they conceded 2 more goals later.
This defeat not only pushed Indonesia down to 5th place in Group C but also caused Garuda to plummet in the FIFA rankings, according to calculations by Football Ranking.
Accordingly, the Indonesian team was deducted 4.24 points and continued to stay at 131st place on the FIFA rankings. Since December last year, the Indonesian team has been deducted a total of 7.15 points and dropped 4 places on the FIFA rankings, from 127th to 131st.
Notably, according to Football Ranking's calculations, if Indonesia can defeat Australia in the 7th round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Garuda can be added up to 20.76 points, bringing them to 120th place in the world with a total of 1,151.26 points. Even in the case of a draw, Indonesia will still have an additional 8.26 points.
Commenting after Indonesia's defeat, FIFA's homepage emphasized: "Indonesia's new coach, Patrick Kluivert, did not have the expected start as Australia won 5-1 in Sydney."
"Despite a late consolation goal from Ole Romeny, Indonesia still had a disappointing start to the reign of new coach Patrick Kluivert," FIFA's homepage added in the content section.
In the next match, Indonesia will host Bahrain at Bung Karno Stadium on March 25. This is a match that Garuda must win if they want to continue to hope to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
