In the strategy of developing the marine economy, the maritime industry plays a very important role, being the gateway for trade, cultural exchange, tourism development with other countries and the basis for promoting the development of the marine economy. However, the capacity to build new ships is still limited compared to countries with a strong shipbuilding industry, especially in terms of technology, production capacity and competitiveness.
As one of more than 100 enterprises attending the 10th International Exhibition on Shipbuilding and Offshore Technology (Vietship 2025), a representative of Vietnam National Shipping Lines said that Vietnam has great potential for developing the marine economy, with much room for exploitation in the fields of maritime transport, supporting industries, shipbuilding, etc. due to its favorable geographical location and much support from the Government.
“We believe that Vietnam still has the opportunity to become a shipbuilding center, a technology and development center of the maritime industry in the region and the world, especially now that there is a trend of modernization, towards green and modern technologies to improve scale and efficiency,” said Mr. Le Quang Trung, Deputy General Director of Vietnam National Shipping Lines.
In addition, foreign investment in the shipbuilding industry is increasing, especially from countries with advanced technology, creating opportunities to learn from experience, transfer technology, and improve the exploitation capacity of domestic shipbuilding enterprises through cooperation and technology transfer opportunities.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Dat, Head of the Organizing Committee of the International Exhibition of Shipbuilding Technology and Offshore Construction, said: “In addition to displaying products and achievements, we also have specialized seminars for businesses to find new opportunities. In the near future, there will be ships running on the ocean with very few or no crew, applying new technology and materials to reduce energy, and applying artificial intelligence.”
By 2030, the Vietnamese fleet will be restructured and developed to about 1,600 - 1,750 ships, with a total tonnage of 17 - 18 million tons to develop the marine economy. The Vietnamese shipbuilding industry is and will receive many favorable opportunities from the macro environment and market development trends. However, maritime and shipbuilding experts believe that in the past, the shipbuilding industry has mainly developed in breadth with the main proportion of processing and assembly, so it has not increased high value.
