Advances in treatment
Cleft lip and palate are quite common in Asian countries. According to statistics in Vietnam, for every 500 babies born, 1 has this defect. Treatment in the past mainly focused on surgical closure of cleft lip and palate in humanitarian surgery batches.
According to Master - Doctor CKII Le Trung Chanh (Director of Ho Chi Minh City Central Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology), in 2018, with the support of the University of British Columbia, BC Children Hospital (Canada), Ho Chi Minh City Central Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology inaugurated the first Comprehensive Treatment Center for Cleft Lip and Palate in Vietnam.

Here, children with the above-mentioned malformations are treated in a comprehensive and continuous process from birth to adulthood. Every year, the center has international experts coming to update new knowledge, techniques, and digital applications in the comprehensive treatment of cleft lip and palate and congenital malformations of the maxillofacial region.
In the 5 years since its establishment, the center has examined, consulted and treated more than 26,000 patients with the coordination of many specialties such as prenatal consultation, nutrition, speech therapy, general dental treatment, orthodontics... With the support and sponsorship of humanitarian organizations, most patients are free or receive support for most of the treatment costs.
Currently, the center has been in close contact with specialized obstetrics and pediatrics hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces and cities. At the same time, it is transferring comprehensive cleft lip and palate treatment techniques to lower-level units, creating conditions for children to be treated, cared for and monitored regularly locally, limiting the need to be transferred to higher-level facilities.
