“Nine years of building Dien Bien / Creating a red wreath, creating a golden history”. Those poetic words resonated in me the first time I visited Dien Bien Phu city.

At the end of last year, in the warm and slightly chilly weather, five artists (4 from Phu Tho, 1 from Da Lat) visited the land of Ban flowers, when the whole province was making efforts to prepare for the "70th Anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory, May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024". I was extremely surprised and delighted to explore and take photos of Dien Bien, which is growing stronger every day, becoming a famous tourist destination in Vietnam and the world. Learning about history, I found that the name Dien Bien was given by King Thieu Tri in 1841. "Dien" means solid, "Bien" is border, "Dien Bien" means solid frontier.

In 1954, the French colonialists landed troops in the Dien Bien Phu basin to build a strategic base, aiming to control and annex Indochina and southern China. The 1954 Dien Bien Phu battle between the Vietnamese army (commanded by General Vo Nguyen Giap) and the French army (commanded by General De Castries) was very fierce. In this battle, Vietnam, with its manpower, intelligence and courage, moved artillery to the hills surrounding the Dien Bien Phu stronghold, attacked the flank and headquarters of the French army, creating the "Dien Bien Phu victory that shook the world".

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the most resounding victory in Vietnam's war history, ending more than 80 years of French colonial rule, was the greatest victory of Southeast Asian countries against a Western power.

After 1954, Dien Bien Phu area belonged to Dien Bien district, Lai Chau province (old). Since 1958, a Military Farm was built here, attracting migrants from the Northern Delta, turning Dien Bien from a farm town into a district town. In 1992, Dien Bien Phu became the provincial town of Lai Chau. In 2003, it was upgraded to Dien Bien Phu city under Lai Chau province.

In particular, at the Dien Bien Provincial Scientific Conference (March 2024), Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha affirmed that although Dien Bien is still a poor province, it has many potentials and advantages. If Dien Bien determines tourism as a spearhead, the most important thing is to discover, arouse, and strongly develop the hidden potentials. To do that, Dien Bien needs to do well the following issues.

Firstly, it is necessary to point out the challenges facing the tourism sector and find solutions to overcome difficulties and challenges.

Second, it is necessary to develop key, directional, strategic, and breakthrough solutions to develop tourism.

Third, we must pay attention to selecting and introducing unique tourism products that are both distinctive and local specialties, but must be associated with the historical value of the Dien Bien Phu victory.

Fourth, it is necessary to quickly connect Dien Bien tourism with the national and international tourism network. Focus on applying 4.0 technology to introduce and promote the tourism, cultural and historical values of Dien Bien, thereby creating inspiration and attracting more tourists.

Finally, Dien Bien needs to promote the connection of 4 parties (State, Scientists, Businesses, Farmers) in tourism development, taking the community tourism model as the center, associated with the development of green tourism, sustainable tourism, and carbon tourism.

Any Vietnamese person dreams of visiting Dien Bien Phu once to travel and experience. For me, the first time I came to Dien Bien, I was able to enjoy many relics, interesting landscapes, take many beautiful photos, interact with artists and the gentle and hospitable people of Dien Bien, enjoy many unforgettable local dishes, and sleep well in the middle of the peaceful and sturdy borderland - these are priceless rewards. My heart is filled with pride in Dien Bien Phu and love for my homeland and country. I promised myself that I would visit Dien Bien "famous in five continents, shaking the world" many more times.
