Ho Chi Minh City's average English score ranks first in the country.

In the 2024 High School Graduation Exam, Ho Chi Minh City has achieved many proud results. Among them, it is necessary to continue to maintain its performance, for the 8th consecutive year, the average English score ranked first in the country. However, in terms of the average total score of all subjects in 2024, Ho Chi Minh City ranked 20th out of 63 provinces and cities. This is a far cry from 2023, which was 11th place, down 9 places.

Regarding this, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City shared that there are many reasons for the decrease in average scores of all subjects. One of them is that 60.85% of students choose the Natural Science exam combination, which is a combination that will have a higher average score than the Social Science combination.

"In addition, most students choose to take the high school graduation exam scores for university admission, have a clear orientation in choosing the exam group and focus on studying those 3 subjects. Therefore, students will not invest much time in studying for subjects that are not included in the university admission score combination, and their scores will be lower. These are the 2 main factors leading to the average score of each subject decreasing compared to last year," said Mr. Hieu.

According to Mr. Hieu, one of the objective factors that affected the results of the high school graduation exam of the students was the time they had to study online at home due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the city has proactively responded and changed appropriate teaching methods, the sudden adaptation to the new learning method has had some impact on the students.

Mr. Hieu affirmed that the decrease in average score does not reflect the decline in the quality of education in the city. On the contrary, the higher rate of students choosing the Natural Science group has proven the correctness of the city's educational orientation. This helps develop future labor resources in line with the country's increasingly modern development orientation, towards science and technology.

"We continue to maintain the current educational method. Our point of view is not only to teach students to solve a math problem, but also to teach them to be able to solve problems in life," Mr. Hieu added.

At the meeting, Mr. Hieu said that the Ho Chi Minh City High School Graduation Examination Council has fully implemented procedures and solutions to ensure the rights of all candidates, including candidates who encountered problems during the exam.
