In 2025, universities will have to convert admission scores between methods to a common scale. Hanoi University of Science and Technology expects candidates with thinking assessment test scores to have a higher coefficient than their high school graduation exam scores.
At the admissions and career counseling program held on March 1, sharing about new points related to the high school graduation exam and university admission in 2025, Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training said that 2025 is the year of high school graduation exam for the first batch of students studying under the 2018 general education program. Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training has revised the high school graduation exam regulations and university and college admission regulations to match the new program.
Specifically, this year's high school graduation exam will have one less exam session and two fewer subjects. Candidates will take two compulsory subjects and two elective subjects. For foreign languages, candidates who have a foreign language certificate according to the prescribed list can be exempted from the exam. In case candidates already have a foreign language certificate but still want to register for the high school graduation exam, they will have to use the results of this exam to consider graduation.
This year, the Ministry of Education and Training will also remove the addition of vocational certificate points in graduation considerations. Regarding graduation criteria, the Ministry will increase the assessment of the learning process (transcript) from 30% to 50%, with the remaining 50% being the graduation exam score.
In particular, 2025 is the year when many students studying the old 2006 program have not graduated or wish to take the exam to get the results for admission to universities, so the Ministry will still organize 2 high school graduation exams for these two groups. In case students following the old program need to take the exam of the 2018 program, they can still take the exam.
Regarding the 2025 university admission regulations, according to Mr. Hung, the Ministry of Education and Training has posted a draft regulation to solicit public opinion. The Ministry of Education and Training has received and completed it, and will announce the official regulations in the near future.
It is expected that the Ministry of Education and Training will eliminate early admission instead of limiting the quota to 20% as proposed. Regarding the bonus points, according to Mr. Hung, many universities have had different ways of adding points in the past. Therefore, the new regulations will stipulate that the bonus points of each candidate will not exceed 10% of the maximum score.
In addition, the regulation is expected to regulate the conversion of equivalent points. Previously, for a training major, universities divided the quota according to each method and combination, on that basis, students would register for admission.
According to the draft new regulations, instead of dividing the quota according to each method and combination, schools will convert the equivalent admission scores between methods to a common scale. The conversion criteria will be based on the evaluation of students in recent years who were admitted through these methods.
Regarding the requirement to convert starting scores from different admission methods, Dr. Vu Duy Hai, Head of Admissions and Career Guidance Department, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that in 2025, Hanoi University of Science and Technology will have 3 admission methods, including admission based on thinking assessment test scores, talent admission and admission based on high school graduation exam scores.
Among these three methods, it is expected that the talent selection method will have the highest equivalent conversion coefficient compared to the other two methods, which are the thinking assessment test score or the high school graduation exam.
“For candidates taking the thinking assessment test, the score of this test will also be more advantageous than the high school graduation exam score. In addition, if candidates have additional foreign language certificates such as IELTS, they can also receive bonus points when considering admission.
For example, a student who gets 75 points in the thinking assessment test, plus 4 points from the IELTS certificate, the admission score using this method is 79 points. This score will be converted to the equivalent to be considered for admission with all other methods," said Mr. Hai.
Dr. Vu Duy Hai added that after the Ministry of Education and Training officially announces the admission regulations, Hanoi University of Science and Technology will announce the method of converting scores between methods for admission. The conversion criteria will be based on the academic results and training results of students who have used this exam to enter Hanoi University of Science and Technology in recent years.
