To enable the elderly to enjoy high quality health care services

This is an event in response to the International Day of Older Persons on October 1 and the National Action Month for Older Persons.

Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Health Tran Van Chung said that recently, Hanoi has effectively implemented a model of healthcare for the elderly in the community, promoting the role of the elderly in family and society.

In 2023, it will be deployed in 30/30 districts, towns, and cities, including: the first-year model and 29 second-year models in 42 communes, wards, and towns of 30 districts, towns, and cities; 40 elderly self-care clubs in 40 communes of 9 districts.

The rate of regular health check-ups for the elderly in 2023 is 88.79% (an increase of 2.4% compared to 2022, exceeding the city's target in 2023 of 87%).

Recently, the project "Support for preventive health care for the elderly applying the Tsuyama model" funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) from 2022 - 2024 has been implemented in Hanoi. It has chosen Bo De ward (Long Bien district) and Ngoc My commune (Quoc Oai district) to implement the project, instructing fall prevention exercises for the elderly with the desire to support the elderly to live happily, healthily and usefully.

Community health care models for the elderly are organized to bring many benefits to the community, raise people's awareness of health care, contributing to improving population quality.

At the conference, the capital's health sector honored 100 elderly people in Gia Lam district. According to the Department of Health, Gia Lam district has 41,443 members (of which 1,857 are under 60 years old), and there are 205 cultural and sports clubs for the elderly in the district. The elderly are all shining examples for the younger generation to follow.

Also at the conference, Director of the Department of Population, Ministry of Health Le Thanh Dung emphasized that the health of the elderly in Vietnam still has many limitations. Although the average life expectancy is high (73.7 years), the average healthy life expectancy is low, only reaching 63.2 healthy years for men and 70 years for women.

About 95% of the elderly have illnesses, mainly chronic non-communicable diseases. On average, an elderly person in our country has 3 illnesses. Meanwhile, the health care system has not met the increasing needs of the elderly.

To improve the effectiveness of elderly health care, the Director of the Department of Population believes that it is necessary to focus and make great efforts from the entire political system in a unified direction and goal along with synchronous solutions. This is to continue institutionalizing the Party's guidelines and policies, the Constitution's regulations, and laws on the elderly; ensuring that the elderly enjoy increasingly high-quality health care services.

 

Vietnam officially entered the aging population phase in 2011 and is expected to become a country with a very aging population by 2036, with the proportion of elderly people aged 60 and over reaching 20.1%. By 2049, the proportion of elderly people will account for about 25% of the population, meaning that for every 4 people, there will be one elderly person.
