Early morning of March 31, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Kingdom of Belgium arrived in Hanoi, starting a State visit to Vietnam from March 31 to April 4, at the invitation of President Luong Cuong and his wife.

Delegates welcome Belgian King Philippe and Queen Mathilde at Noi Bai International Airport.

Welcoming the delegation at Noi Bai International Airport were: Deputy Head of the Office of the President Phan Thi Kim Oanh; Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang, Vietnamese Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium Nguyen Van Thao.

Accompanying the King and Queen of Belgium on their visit to Vietnam were: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prévot; Minister - President of the Government of the Brussels Capital Region Rudi Vervoort; Minister - President of the Government of the French-speaking Belgian Community Elisabeth Degryse; Minister - President of the Government of the Walloon Region Adrien Dolimont; Minister in charge of Brussels and Communications, Government of the Flanders Region Cieltje Van Achter.

King Philippe was born on April 15, 1960 in Brussels, Belgium. He holds a Master's degree in Political Science from Stanford University. The King is married to Queen Mathilde and has four children.

The King was Honorary President of the Belgian Foreign Trade Agency (BFTA); Honorary President of the Belgian Federal Council for Sustainable Development (1993-2013). Since 1998, he has been the founder of the Prince Philippe Foundation.

Since 2002, he has been Honorary President of the International Polar Fund. Since 2013, he has been the seventh King of the Kingdom of Belgium.

The King visited Vietnam in 1993, 2003 and 2012 as Crown Prince Philippe. The King loves Vietnam and has a deep impression of the beautiful country and hospitable people.

Queen Mathilde of the Kingdom of Belgium was born on January 20, 1973 in Brussels (Belgium). She has a Master's degree in Psychology from the Catholique de Louvain University; a Bachelor's degree in Speech Therapy from the Haute École Léonard de Vinci University.

Queen Mathilde of Belgium was a speech therapist (1995-1999). Since 2001, she has been Honorary President of the Queen Mathilde Foundation (supporting youth).

Since 2009, she has been Honorary President of Unicef ​​Belgium. Since 2010, she has been Honorary President of the International Breast Cancer Research Foundation; Honorary Member of the Board of the Schwab Foundation for Social Enterprise.

From 2011 to 2013, she was the World Health Organization Special Envoy for the Promotion of Immunization. From 2014 to present, the Queen is the Patron of the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition; Honorary President of the Child Focus Foundation (child protection).

Since 2015, the Queen has been Honorary President of the King Baudouin Foundation (supporting projects and individuals). In 2016, the Queen joined the group of Activists for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Since 2018, the Queen has been Honorary President of the Belgian Federal Council for Sustainable Development. And since 2019, the Queen has been Patron and Honorary Member of the Royal Belgian Academy of Medicine.

The Queen visited Vietnam in 2012 as Princess of Belgium with Crown Prince Philippe and in 2023 as Honorary President of UNICEF Belgium.

The Queen loves Vietnam and enjoys visiting Vietnamese localities. Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang said that the State visit to Vietnam by the King and Queen of Belgium is a special visit, of great significance to the relationship between the two countries.

This is the first State visit after more than 50 years of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries, especially in the context of Vietnam entering a new era; an important historical milestone, bringing the relationship between the two countries into a new stage of development, with higher political trust, and more substantial and effective cooperation.

Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Vietnam Karl Van den Bossche emphasized that this State visit not only affirms Vietnam's role as a reliable and stable partner of Belgium, strengthening bilateral cooperation in many fields, but also shows the importance of Vietnam in the international arena in the context of the current volatile world; affirming that close cooperation between partners such as Belgium and Vietnam is necessary to promote the role of ASEAN, the European Union (EU), as well as relations between the EU and Vietnam.
