Yesterday's 2-0 win over Wolves helped goalkeeper David de Gea win the 2022-2023 Golden Glove award three rounds early, even though Man Utd conceded the most goals in the top 4 of the Premier League.
At Old Trafford yesterday, De Gea did not have to make any saves as Wolves only had five shots off target. This was the 16th time the Spanish goalkeeper has kept a clean sheet in the Premier League this season and officially became the owner of the Golden Glove award.
Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), Alisson Becker (Liverpool) and Nick Pope (Newcastle) have all kept 13 clean sheets. If they prevent their opponents from scoring in the remaining three matches, they will equal De Gea's record of 16 clean sheets. Similarly, De Gea can improve his record when Man Utd have three more matches against Bournemouth on May 20, Chelsea on May 25, Fulham on May 28. If he can improve his record, the 1990-born goalkeeper will monopolize the Golden Glove award. In the case that there are multiple goalkeepers with a maximum of 16 clean sheets, they will share the title.

De Gea won the Golden Glove award, but Man Utd is the club that has conceded the most goals in the top 4 of the Premier League with 41 goals. The records of Man City, Arsenal, Newcastle are 31, 39, 31 goals respectively. The "Red Devils" are also the club with the worst goal difference in the Top 5, with +10. This parameter of Man City, Arsenal, Newcastle, Liverpool is +58, +44, +32, +25 respectively.
This season, De Gea has been criticized for making many mistakes, most recently the missed push that caused Man Utd to lose 0-1 at West Ham on May 7. However, coach Erik ten Hag affirmed that he never considered putting De Gea on the bench and wanted to extend his contract with his student.
The Spanish goalkeeper has more than a month left on his contract with Man Utd, with an option to extend it by another year. According to British newspaper Sportmail, the Old Trafford club are getting closer to keeping De Gea as he has agreed to a huge pay cut of $450,000 a week compared to his current contract.
De Gea joined Man Utd from Atletico in 2011 and is currently the longest-serving player at Old Trafford . He won the Golden Glove award with 18 matches without conceding a goal in the Premier League in the 2017-2018 season. This season, Man Utd under Jose Mourinho finished second in the Premier League, behind champions Man City with a record 100 points.
According to statistics on the Premier League homepage, De Gea played 412 matches with 146 clean sheets, won 222 and lost 91 matches. The Spanish goalkeeper saved 1,147 times, blocked four penalties, punched the ball 136 times, came out of the box to clear the ball 113 times, conceded 444 goals, made 17 errors leading to goals and scored an own goal once. He received six yellow cards, passed a total of 9,286 passes, an average of 22.54 passes per match and kicked the ball accurately 2,316 times.
The Golden Glove award was first given in the 2004-05 season and only one goalkeeper could win the award. If more than one goalkeeper had the same number of clean sheets, the goalkeeper with the highest clean sheet percentage would be honored. In the 2013-14 season, this rule changed when the Golden Glove was divided among goalkeepers with the same number of clean sheets, regardless of the number of games they played. Last season, Brazilian goalkeepers Ederson and Alisson Becker shared the award with 20 clean sheets.
Petr Cech was the first goalkeeper to win the Golden Glove and also set a record of 24 clean sheets in the 2004-2005 season. With four awards each, Cech and Joe Hart are the goalkeepers who have won the award the most times. Cech is the only goalkeeper to have won the award with two different clubs, Chelsea (three times) and Arsenal (once).
Pepe Reina was the first goalkeeper to win the Golden Glove three seasons in a row, from 2006 to 2008. Two Man City goalkeepers have since repeated the feat, Hart from 2011 to 2013, and Ederson from 2020 to 2022.
