Does keeping your phone in your pocket cause infertility?

VnExpressVnExpress15/09/2023

Does regularly keeping your phone in your pocket affect sexual ability and reproductive function? (Male, 29 years old, Ha Giang).

Reply:

Currently, there is no scientific evidence that wifi waves or cell phone waves affect fertility. There is no scientific research confirming that cell phones affect erections or sexual function in men in general. However, cell phones have a great impact on sperm mobility and shape.

In fact, mobile phones can affect male fertility through heat generation. Men exposed to high temperatures can lead to sperm abnormalities. Keeping mobile phones in trouser pockets can increase testicular temperature due to close contact, negatively affecting male fertility.

Therefore, frequent exposure to mobile phone waves will affect fertility more than sexual ability. Using the phone as an inseparable object will lead to circadian rhythm disorders, especially sleep quality.

A study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility , published by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, found that men who used their cell phones for more than four hours a day had lower sperm counts and decreased sperm motility than those who used their phones less. However, the study was deemed unreliable due to its small sample size and the fact that it lacked other factors that could affect male fertility, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and obesity.

Sexual dysfunction can be caused by habits, environment, and quality of sex. To find the cause and the right treatment, you should go to the doctor for a general assessment of your sexual health.
