Along with the development of technology, especially in the context of natural disasters and pandemics, online learning has been considered an important solution, creating conditions for learners to study anywhere, anytime, especially schools, teachers and students in rural and mountainous areas such as Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai, Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri... often affected by natural disasters and floods.
Online teaching and learning is being widely applied in many countries around the world.
Nowadays, online learning brings many benefits to both teachers and learners. When the Internet is available everywhere, combined with easy-to-carry smart devices such as mobile phones or laptops, learning becomes simple, easy and proactive. Students can flexibly choose the time, space, courses, and appropriate learning content...
In addition, diverse, highly synchronized learning materials are always available 24/7, helping students to comfortably review and be more proactive with their learning progress: study 15 minutes a day in the evening or study during lunch break or can review and stop if needed.
Moreover, with smart devices, students can study anywhere, saving a lot of time and money spent on travel. Students can participate in courses with reputable teachers everywhere, access international learning resources with low tuition fees, even 0 VND.
Combining traditional teaching and learning with technology-based teaching and learning will support better training activities, create motivation and encourage creativity of teachers and learners, contribute to innovation in teaching methods, and improve the quality of education and training.
The trend of online learning has been spreading all over the world, with the support of modern technology infrastructure and great attention from the government, the Asia-Pacific region has become one of the "hot spots" of future education.
Online teaching and learning in Vietnam - An inevitable trend for sustainable education development, adapting to the future |
In Asia-Pacific, the adoption of mobile e-learning has a high market share. China and India contribute the most to the mobile phone population, with 880 million and 470 million users respectively, and estimates show that the use of mobile infrastructure has become a potential platform for the education sector. Mobile e-learning initiatives in this region aim to improve education levels and eliminate illiteracy. Japan, Bangladesh, South Korea and a number of countries have been implementing large-scale national mobile e-learning projects. These countries have all adopted policies to facilitate the use of mobile devices in education, contributing to promoting future learning environments such as Smart Schools in Malaysia, FutureSchools@Singapore in Singapore, Smart Education Promotion Strategy in South Korea, etc.
In Vietnam, online learning and building an online learning environment are being promoted by many schools in primary, secondary, high schools, continuing education and vocational schools across the country. There are many platforms and applications that schools use in flexible combination with the school curriculum to ensure that students can learn anytime, anywhere. For example, through the KAV Open School model deployed by Khan Academy Vietnam in cities and provinces such as Hanoi, Hoa Binh, Tuyen Quang, Thanh Hoa, Binh Duong, Kien Giang, etc., teachers and students can use the Khan Academy platform to teach and learn effectively. Students can study according to their own path and teachers can easily evaluate learning outcomes through AI (Artificial Intelligence).
Using AI and Big Data to create personalized learning experiences. Online learning platforms are becoming increasingly intelligent, automatically adapting content and teaching methods to each student’s needs and progress. Increasing use of interactive tools, such as videos, online tests, and learning games, makes learning more fun and engaging.
Online teaching and learning ensures knowledge and safety for students
Vietnam currently has a population of nearly 100 million, including more than 20 million students and about 1.5 million teachers. The speed of popularity and penetration of online teaching and learning in Vietnam has increased quite rapidly in recent years. In fact, recent times have shown that online teaching and learning is truly necessary, no longer a "circumstantial solution" to overcome the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic but also an optimal solution when facing natural disasters and floods.
The storm and flood have negatively affected many activities in the field of education and training such as: the implementation of content, programs, teaching and learning plans (having to change, interrupt, have to extend compared to the original plan); impact on the psychology of learners and parents (being shaken, confused); difficulties related to managing learners, guiding learning content, etc. Therefore, applying online teaching and learning is considered one of the effective solutions, taking advantage of social resources to help schools' learning plans not be interrupted, students stop going to school but do not stop learning. In addition, students can use online learning platforms to self-study and review at home to consolidate knowledge, thereby easily catching up with the school curriculum.
Currently, there are many online learning platforms with international quality, including Khan Academy - an international quality educational platform with a large library of learning materials on Math, English, Programming, SAT preparation... for all subjects and completely free. In Vietnam, the Khan Academy platform has localized many courses to bring open, free learning opportunities to students nationwide, without regional or economic limitations.
Online classes are not limited by distance and number of students. |
At Pung Luong Primary Boarding School - Mu Cang Chai, Yen Bai, most of the students are ethnic minorities, teachers and students face many difficulties such as working under rudimentary roofs and often being affected by natural disasters and floods. Ms. Kieu Thi Huong - Vice Principal of the school said: "Realizing that the Khan Academy platform can support the school in managing and teaching students in an intuitive way. At the same time, supporting the process of improving the capacity to apply technology in teaching, contributing to the digital transformation of education at Pung Luong Primary School in particular and Mu Cang Chai in general, we will try, try to overcome difficulties to complete the digital transformation task as well as bring students the best learning experience".
For Mien Doi Primary and Secondary School, which is “lost” in the middle of the mountains of Lac Son, Hoa Binh, using Khan Academy is a great effort of the teachers because this place lacks a lot of learning equipment. However, in the spirit of Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc - Vice Principal of Mien Doi Primary and Secondary School shared: “If we love our students, we try to overcome difficulties so that they can study more happily, more effectively and access technology every day. The students at Mien Doi all try very hard to study. Some students have to go to school from 4 am, taking about 2-3 hours to get to school. Seeing that the students love to study, especially love to study through videos on Khan Academy, the teachers and I try to accompany them.”
It can be said that with the adaptation of the times, online learning is forecasted to develop strongly and sustainably in the future. Online learning has opened a new era in education, with profound changes and long-term vision such as: Access to education for all subjects; Flexibility in time and space; New teaching methods, integrating many technologies; No limits, no distance, bringing educational equality to all students.
