On the 27th day of the Lunar New Year, the spring flower fair on Tran Quoc Nghien coastal street in Ha Long City (Quang Ninh) was always crowded with buyers. Many sellers earned hundreds of millions of dong when their goods were sold quickly.
Every year, near Tet, Ha Long City organizes a flower fair at 30/10 Square located on Tran Quoc Nghien coastal road.
At the fair, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, owner of a peach kiosk from Lang Son province, was excitedly introducing his products to customers. Mr. Tung said that nearly a week ago, he brought over 200 peach trees from Lang Son to sell here.
"This year, peach growers in Quang Ninh suffered a lot of damage due to storm No. 3. Therefore, our products do not face much competition from local peaches because they are more beautiful.
The cheapest branches cost 800,000 VND, the most expensive branches cost 6 million VND. We only have about a dozen branches left. After deducting expenses, we made a profit of nearly 100 million VND. So we have a full Tet holiday," Mr. Tung boasted.
Meanwhile, the mining kiosk of Mr. Luong Van Hai from Lai Chau province is mainly for rent.
Mr. Hai said that a few years ago, he mainly brought branches down to sell. But since 2023, seeing that Quang Ninh people tend to rent more, he has switched to investing in large peach trees, shaping them and bringing them down to Ha Long.
Pointing to a peach tree with beautiful shape and even flower buds, Mr. Hai added that if this tree is sold outright, it will cost 12 million VND, and if rented, it will cost 8 million VND.
"I brought down more than 200 trees and the number of tenants has reached over 100. Because according to customers, if they buy them outright, it will be a waste because they don't have experience in taking care of them. Roughly calculating, up to this point, we have earned over 100 million VND," said Mr. Hai.
Coming to the peach blossom selling area, one can also see the bustling atmosphere of buying and selling. Mr. Nguyen Van Nghi from Son La province said that for nearly ten years he has been bringing peach blossoms to Ha Long to sell. This year, he brought over 400 branches.
"My peach trees sell for 600-800 thousand VND/branch. This price is suitable for the budget of most workers' families, so they sell very well. This afternoon, I only have 8 branches left, and I expect them to be gone in a little while, so I'm preparing to pack up and go home," said Mr. Nghi.
Along with peach blossoms, kumquat trees, apricot blossoms, orchids, and lilies are also products that are very popular with Ha Long City residents. This year's selling price is quite high compared to last year.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy, the owner of an orchid kiosk, happily shared: When storm No. 3 hit, her family's orchid garden suffered quite a lot of damage. Luckily, her family quickly recovered so they could still sell flowers this Tet.
"If last year, the price of each tree fluctuated from 130,000 to 150,000 VND, this year it was sold for 200,000 VND. Although it is a bit more expensive, people buy a lot, so orchid growers in Ha Long City can still ensure their income," Ms. Thuy shared.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Chien, living in Hong Hai ward, Ha Long city, after choosing to buy a peach tree worth nearly 2 million VND, commented: "I thought that this year peach and kumquat trees would be very bad because many localities were affected by storm No. 3. However, when I went to the fair, I saw that the trees were all very beautiful, and the prices were only slightly more expensive than last year."
Not only are peach, kumquat, and flower sellers excited about good prices and fast sales, but a large labor force is also very enthusiastic. They are the motorbike taxi drivers who transport peach and kumquat trees to customers' homes.
Mr. Do Van Chung, who lives in Cao Thang Ward, Ha Long City, boasted that he has been working here for a week now. With a flat rate of 100,000 VND/trip within a distance of 8 kilometers, Mr. Chung earns about 1.5 million VND per day.
"I am a retired miner. For the past few years, every Tet holiday, I go to the flower fair to transport goods for hire. If I work hard, I can earn more than ten million. So the whole family can have a decent Tet," said Mr. Chung.
