Richard Chamberlain, the actor who played Father Ralph in "The Thorn Birds," has died at the age of 90 after suffering a stroke.
The world screen lost a veteran name who was associated with famous TV series in the 80s of the last century.
In an announcement on March 30, journalist Harlan Boll said Chamberlain passed away on the evening of March 29 in Hawaii (USA) local time.
George Richard Chamberlain was born on March 31, 1934 in Los Angeles (USA). He is the son of a business family.
In 1952, he graduated from Beverly Hills High School and attended Pomona College.
In 1956, Chamberlain joined the US Army and was stationed in Korea with his comrades for about 16 months.
After his discharge, Chamberlain went to Hollywood to pursue an acting career. He rose to fame in the television series "Dr. Kildare" where he played a handsome, kind, and caring medical doctor.
The role earned Chamberlain a large female fan base. At the time, he received an average of 12,000 fan letters a week, breaking the previous record set by legendary actor Clark Gable in the blockbuster "Gone With the Wind."
Chamberlain then continued to appear in a number of short films such as "Shogun" (1980) or "The Thorn Birds" (1983) and many other successful films.
During his acting career, the actor won many awards and titles such as the Golden Apple Award in 1962, the Golden Globe Award for Best Male Television Star in 1963 for the film "Dr. Kildare" (1961).
