The tragic fate of a girl with heart disease, deaf and mute, and damaged eyes
Ms. NTKT, the baby's mother, said that when the baby was 5 days old, the doctor discovered that the baby had congenital hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Not only that, the family later discovered that the baby could not hear. Therefore, the baby lost the opportunity to learn to speak like normal babies.
When the child was 3 and a half years old, she hoped that the child would have heart surgery. However, in the final check-up before the surgery, the doctor at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed that both the front and back walls of the child's heart were too thick to be treated and that they would have to wait until the child grew up.
A month ago, the mother discovered that her baby had to squint and drag her feet along the ground when walking. She took her to an eye doctor and was diagnosed with retinal detachment in both eyes and cataracts. If not operated on promptly, it could lead to permanent blindness.
The family tried to go to hospitals from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, but the doctors all said that the baby could not be operated on because of his heart disease. Luckily, during a medical examination, baby T. was examined by Dutch doctor Jan Dirk Ferwerda, a leading ophthalmologist. He referred the patient to FV Hospital for surgery.
The baby's mother said that when the family was invited to attend the consultation at FV Hospital, they were both happy and worried. Worried because the doctor mentioned the complications that the baby could encounter during the surgery, and worried because of the large cost of treatment.
Either find the light or die
On September 12, Master - Doctor Vu Truong Son, Deputy Medical Director, FV Hospital, said that baby T.'s case is very special, not only is it a difficult treatment but the baby's situation is also very difficult and critical.
"If we don't operate, there is a risk of permanent blindness. If we operate, we may have to accept the risk of death due to the anesthesia caused by the child's congenital heart disease. But we are determined to save the child no matter what. The child cannot hear or speak, we cannot imagine the pain when the child's world is all black, without sound or light. Therefore, we have to consult many times to arrange everything as fully as possible," Dr. Vu Truong Son shared.
Due to the very difficult nature of the surgery on a child with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the doctors held four inter-hospital consultations in one week. All risks and plans to deal with dangerous situations were carefully calculated.
Specialist 2 Doctor Ly Quoc Thinh, Head of the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation, FV Hospital, said that the biggest challenge for the treatment team was anesthesia and resuscitation because the baby was too underweight and had a congenital heart disease, so the risk of hypotension during surgery was very high. Therefore, to ensure safety, the hospital invited two leading experts in anesthesia and resuscitation for heart surgery from Children's Hospital 1 to discuss and participate in the surgery.
Doctor examines baby after surgery
4 hours of tension for the family and surgical team
The entire surgical team performed the surgery with utmost caution and urgency, racing against time. Doctor Thinh said that during the surgery, the baby's blood pressure and heart rate dropped, and the doctors had to use medication three times to stabilize the blood pressure and control the heart rate to an acceptable level.
Finally, after 4 hours of tension, the surgery was successful, the patient was removed from the breathing tube, could breathe effectively on his own in the recovery room and continued to be closely monitored in the Intensive Care Unit. After a day, the child's health gradually stabilized.
"That afternoon, I couldn't sit still for 4 hours, sometimes crying and sometimes chanting Buddha's name. And then I burst into tears when I heard the news that the surgery was successful, and that the baby did not need oxygen after surgery. Even happier was that after a week of follow-up, the baby was able to see almost as well as before. I am very grateful to the doctors," said T.'s mother emotionally.
