Domestic pepper prices updated on the afternoon of March 15, 2025

Currently, the weather in the Central Highlands is dry and sunny, which is favorable for farmers to harvest the main pepper crop. According to the general assessment, this year's crop has produced a lot of pepper and achieved high productivity. In addition, the high price has made pepper farmers excited, their income is more stable, thereby making them more impartial in caring for and planting new pepper.

However, with the sharp increase in pepper prices, agricultural experts also advise people not to massively expand the planting area, avoiding the situation of spontaneous planting leading to oversupply as before. Instead, focus on sustainable farming. Farmers need to switch to organic farming models, reduce the use of pesticides to improve product quality.

Vietnam currently has more than 110,000 hectares of pepper growing area, with an average yield of 26 quintals/ha, double the global average. However, pepper output in the 2024-2025 crop year is forecast to reach only about 172,000 tons, down 2% compared to the previous year and down sharply by 47% compared to the 2018-2019 crop year, due to the shrinking pepper growing area and increasingly fierce competition from Brazil, Indonesia, and India. Globally, pepper output in 2025 is also at risk of decline due to unfavorable weather in India.

Farmers in Dak Nong province harvest pepper

According to experts, the fact that many people are hoarding pepper waiting for prices to increase has led to a situation where pepper prices at the farm are sometimes higher than raw material prices at export producers. The current situation will make business more difficult if farmers continue to limit the sale of raw materials to the market.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), pepper prices are currently high thanks to stable demand from the US and European markets, bringing significant profits to pepper growers. However, during this year's peak harvest season, many farmers tend to hoard pepper in anticipation of higher prices, causing raw materials to become scarce. This forces processing enterprises to use their inventories to fulfill signed export contracts, putting great pressure on business operations, especially when pepper prices at the farm gate sometimes exceed raw material prices at exporters.
