People's Artist Khai Hung's full name is Nguyen Khai Hung, born on November 18, 1948 in Hanoi, graduated from the Physics Department, Hanoi Pedagogical University 2. After working as a teacher for a short time, he switched to programming and worked at a research institute. In 1979, he attended the first Directing class of Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema.
In 1982, he released Nguoi Thanh Pho, the first film on tape of Vietnamese television. Shortly after graduating, the film My Child by Nguyen Khai Hung won the gold medal at the 6th Vietnam Film Festival (1983). In 1985, he produced the film Canh Dieu Nho , the first video film of the Audiovisual Center of Vietnam Television.
In 1993, Nguyen Khai Hung became widely known when The Curse of the River won the award for best film at the Brussels International Television Festival (Belgium). The work caused a big stir when it became the first Vietnamese film made on magnetic tape to win an award at an international festival.
People's Artist Khai Hung founded many famous programs such as: Sunday Arts, Weekend Meeting and laid the foundation for the television series, considered the "father" of Prime Time Vietnamese movies on Vietnam Television.
He is known as the "boss" who directed the first 40 episodes of the hit series Criminal Police .
In 2003, Vietnam Television Film Studio changed its name to Vietnam Television Film Center (VFC), Nguyen Khai Hung became the first director and held this role until his retirement.
Also in that year, Meet at the End of the Year was born and Khai Hung was considered the "father" of the annual comedy show every Lunar New Year. Despite constantly facing many controversies, many rumors as well as plans to stop broadcasting, until now, Meet at the End of the Year is still considered "spiritual food" for Vietnamese television audiences on New Year's Eve.
In 2005, as Director of VFC, Khai Hung was elected Vice President of the Vietnam Cinema Association, term 6, 2005–2010. Before that, he held the position of Deputy Secretary General of the association, term 2000–2005.
In 2007, he received the State Prize for Literature and Arts for three works: My Mother-in-law, The Curse of the River and Nothing Left to Say . That same year, he was awarded the title of People's Artist by the State.
People's Artist Khai Hung is famous for his dedication and enthusiasm in film projects. He once lost an eye because he was absorbed in making the film Sinh Tu. When he discovered that his eyesight had decreased while choosing a scene, he initially thought the camera was broken because he could only see black, but after switching to his left eye, his vision returned to normal. The doctor diagnosed corneal hemorrhage and scheduled a follow-up appointment, but he did not go on time because of his busy filming schedule.
After completing the film, People's Artist Khai Hung returned to the hospital but his right eye was already covered with corneal scarring and could no longer be saved.
People's Artist Khai Hung is famous for his straightforward statements about the profession. He once shared: "There are no stars or Meritorious Artists or People's Artists, there are only actors and roles. Many new actors make their names in just one film. Moreover, I like new faces and have no concept that my films have to rely on any stars to go forward."
"Don't do anything without fun"
Currently, at a long retirement age, People's Artist Khai Hung is still active. On his personal page, the veteran director still shares photos in the studio. He also wrote: "Principle after retirement: Don't do anything that is not fun." In addition to focusing on work, he also spends time hanging out with friends and relatives.
Although he frankly commented on many people, People's Artist Khai Hung limited his comments about his son - director Khai Anh. As a famous young director of VFC, Khai Anh has succeeded with many films loved by audiences such as Tuoi Thanh Xuan, Nguoi Phan Xu...
According to People's Artist Khai Hung, the two rarely cooperate because "each person does their own thing", he respects his son's private life. He once jokingly said that Khai Anh has never hidden behind him and is not too concerned when his son receives many compliments from colleagues and audiences.
