A special reunion of revived lungs

On September 23, at the Central Lung Hospital, a special meeting called "Reviving lungs" took place between 3 people who had successfully received lung transplants.

In 2024, the Central Lung Hospital continued to conduct 2 successful transplants at the hospital for patients with PAT and TTH with remote support from the UCSF Lung Transplant Center - one of the 9 largest and most prestigious lung transplant centers in the US.

Doctors at the Central Lung Hospital presented flowers to congratulate lung transplant patients.

The latest lung transplant case at the Central Lung Hospital is patient TTH (from Bac Ninh). The patient received a lung donated by a brain-dead donor, whose organs were coordinated from Viet Duc Friendship Hospital to the Central Lung Hospital on April 2.

As a patient revived on the 30th of Tet this year, PAT has a new healthy life, gaining 7kg compared to before the lung transplant.

After nearly 8 months of lung transplant, she has returned to normal life, continuing her second year of study at Thai Nguyen University of Information Technology and Communications.

Emotionally sharing at the meeting, PAT choked up and shared that his family thought that the last Tet holiday in 2024 would be the last Tet holiday he would have in this world.

But now, with two healthy lungs in my chest, I can breathe, live, return to school, and continue to fulfill my life's dream.

After a period of recovery, PAT is now able to take care of herself, walk, ride a motorbike, and study normally. Another dream that she had after leaving the Central Lung Hospital after the lung transplant was to play basketball, and now it is about to come true.

The third patient, Mr. NXT (Thanh Hoa), is the longest-living case in Vietnam after a lung transplant, since receiving a donated lung in 2020. Over the past 4 years, his life has truly taken on an optimistic color as he can breathe, walk, and take care of himself.

“Now life is more normal than before, life is better. I even got to see my son get married, that is a great joy. I hope more people can be saved like me and I hope doctors and nurses stay healthy to help more people like me,” said Mr. Toai.

Regarding the recent organ transplant results at the facility, according to Dr. Dinh Van Luong, Director of the Central Lung Hospital, the success of the recent lung transplants at the hospital is the collaboration of leading experts in the field of lung transplants in Vietnam and the remote support of the UCSF Lung Transplant Center - one of the 9 largest and most prestigious lung transplant centers in the US.

According to Dr. Luong, currently the process of diagnosis, lung transplant, pre- and post-operative treatment... at the Central Lung Hospital has met the standards of developed countries such as the US, Europe, Japan...

Every year, there are about 5,000 lung transplants worldwide, mainly from brain-dead donors; of which, there are about 2,500 cases in the US.

Currently, Vietnam has about 1,000 cases with indications for lung transplants but there is a shortage of donated organs. Compared to the lung transplant procedures that meet the standards of advanced countries in the world, we are now starting with numbers 1, 2, 3 but in the future, we will conduct many more successful lung transplants. When it becomes a routine program, lung transplant techniques will be deployed annually, helping many patients to revive.

The Director of the Central Lung Hospital also expressed his wish that Vietnam would become a country with a name on the world map of lung transplants, becoming the Lung Transplant Center of the entire Southeast Asia region.

It is known that since 2020, the Central Lung Hospital, the leading specialized hospital for Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis in Vietnam, has mastered and coordinated the successful implementation of lung transplant techniques.

This is the most difficult technique in the field of organ transplantation, requiring strict coordination of all departments, specialized departments, procedures for preparing the donor's lungs, transplant surgery, post-transplant care and resuscitation using advanced techniques, modern drugs, chemicals, medical supplies and comprehensive care from experts in various medical specialties.

To date, the Hospital has successfully coordinated to perform 3 lung transplants, of which the NXT patient who received a lung transplant on September 16, 2024 is the patient with the longest post-transplant survival in Vietnam.

In 2024 alone, the Central Lung Hospital coordinated to perform 2 lung transplants for PAT patients and TTH patients. These 2 transplants were conducted at the Hospital with the participation of online consultations by leading experts from different hospitals.

The above surgeries were performed according to strict, methodical procedures and were successful in accordance with international standards.

In particular, the third lung transplant for a patient with TTH is considered a more complicated and difficult lung transplant, because the patient has many serious underlying diseases, the surgery is difficult due to the difficult anatomical structure, requiring high technical skills of surgical experts, at the same time the resuscitation and post-operative care process is complicated, requiring strict monitoring, timely intervention, and close and comprehensive coordination between many specialties.

This lung transplant presented many challenges to the team of experts, doctors, and medical staff. However, overcoming the difficulties, the patient's health has now recovered well and he will soon be discharged from the hospital.

Currently, all 3 patients are healthy, in stable health, and can live, work and study normally.

The above successful transplants are a major milestone recognizing the remarkable progress of the doctors at the Central Lung Hospital with the special instructions and attention of the Ministry of Health, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, and the close coordination of many units inside and outside the Hospital.

With these successes, our country's lung transplant program will be recognized in the list of lung transplant systems in the world. The success of this lung transplant has contributed significantly to Vietnam's achievements in organ transplant techniques; the lung transplant program will help save thousands of patients who can only be cured by lung transplant;

According to Dr. Dinh Van Luong, the technical procedures for diagnosis, medical treatment and lung surgery will be the same as those in developed countries. With the constant effort to conquer the pinnacle of science, constantly applying new techniques, successful lung transplants are medical miracles in the cause of saving lives. The map of Vietnamese medicine continues to open up to the world with many new successes, raising the level of the country's medicine to new heights.
