Dong Da Secondary School (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) has announced disciplinary action against a student who beat up a friend.
Mr. Lam Huy Hoang, Principal of Dong Da Secondary School, said that the school's Disciplinary Council had agreed on how to handle the student fight. Among them was a male student who repeatedly hit his friend in the face and some students who witnessed the fight did not intervene and even filmed a clip that went viral on social media on October 29.
According to Mr. Hoang, after reviewing and weighing the level of violation, the disciplinary council agreed on the forms of handling.
Specifically, a male student who repeatedly slaps and hits his friend in the head and face will be suspended from school for 2 weeks, have his first semester training evaluation lowered, and will continue to monitor his learning process to assess progress in the second semester.
In addition, the male student who was beaten by his friend was also at fault, so his monthly performance rating was reduced. The students who filmed the clip and watched were also suspended from school for a week, and their monthly performance rating was reduced.
Disciplinary action will be taken from November 14, after students complete midterm exams.
The principal of Dong Da Secondary School added that the form of student discipline is mainly educational and corrective. During the time off school, students will have to study by themselves and do exercises according to the materials provided by the teachers. The school also assigned homeroom teachers to coordinate with subject teachers to provide subject materials and support students if they encounter difficult or incomprehensible knowledge content.
The image of a male student repeatedly hitting his friend's head and face was recorded in the clip.
Previously, as Thanh Nien Newspaper reported, on October 30, a video of school violence (about 15 seconds) was circulated on social media, showing a male student swearing, slapping and punching another male student repeatedly in the face right in the classroom.
The beaten male student could only hold his head and endure the vulgar curses and continuous slaps and punches to the face and head.
The Board of Directors of Dong Da Secondary School confirmed that the incident occurred in a 9th grade classroom on October 25.
Realizing that the incident affected the students' psychology and caused frustration among their parents, the Department of Education and Training of Binh Thanh District requested the school to establish a disciplinary council to handle the incident in order to deter and educate the students. The Department of Education and Training also requested that during the flag-raising ceremony, the school raise the incident to deter, remind, and educate the entire school to prevent similar incidents from happening.
Accordingly, Mr. Tran Anh Kiet, Head of the Department of Education and Training, said that the Department of Education and Training seriously criticized the Board of Directors of Dong Da Secondary School and directed all schools in the district to pay special attention to student management. Schools need to strengthen monitoring activities to prevent school violence, enhance life skills education for students, and effectively promote the role of school psychological counseling rooms.
