Ho Chi Minh City 2023 World Carom 3-Cushion Champion Bao Phuong Vinh was warmly welcomed when he and runner-up Tran Quyet Chien returned to Vietnam on the evening of September 13.

Although the flight bringing two Vietnamese players from Türkiye to Ho Chi Minh City was delayed by three hours, a group of billiards lovers and the media patiently waited for the new champion and runner-up of the world 3-cushion carom tournament.

At exactly 9:30 p.m., player Bao Phuong Vinh stepped out of the international arrivals terminal at Tan Son Nhat airport amid cheers from fans. In response, he smiled and thanked the waiting fans.

The player born in 1995 raised the world championship trophy he just won in Ankara, Türkiye on September 10.

A representative of Binh Duong sports industry was present to present flowers to congratulate the player from his home province.

Phuong Vinh was born in 1995 in Binh Duong and started competing professionally over a year ago. This was his first time participating in the World Championship, but he immediately won with a perfect record.

Champion and runner-up Quyet Chien received flowers, prize money and congratulations in a short ceremony at Tan Son Nhat. Phuong Vinh and Quyet Chien are the two representatives of Vietnam attending the tournament in Ankara recently, and are also the two leading players in the country according to the current ranking of the World Billiards Federation (UMB).

Billiard lovers also did not forget to capture the moment with the young player who won the World 3-cushion carom championship for the first time.

"I was very surprised and happy with the welcome from the fans," said Phuong Vinh. He is the first Vietnamese player to win the 3-cushion carom world championship.

"In the past few days, after winning the championship, I have received a lot of wishes and love from the online community. That will fuel my motivation for the upcoming tournaments. I am very grateful to everyone and will try to improve myself to contribute more to the country's billiards," the 28-year-old player added.

In the final match on the evening of September 10 in Ankara, Phuong Vinh led Quyet Chien for most of the time, with the turning point being an 8-point series to lead 29-22. While Quyet Chien lost his cue feeling and continuously lost points since then, Phuong Vinh played more steadily and accumulated each point. In the last 12 rounds, Vietnam's number one player only earned four points, while his junior won 11 points. In the end, Phuong Vinh beat Quyet Chien 50-34 after 33 rounds.

Quyet Chien has won the World Cup twice - a tournament that was established in 1986 and has many stages throughout the year. But this is the first time he has reached the final of the world championship when he lost to Phuong Vinh on September 10. The 39-year-old player was sad when he first walked out of the arrival hall.

After being welcomed and congratulated for his runner-up position, he became happier. “Actually, I am not sad or regretful because we did very well in the two semi-finals. So when we reach the final, whoever loses is fine because the World Cup still belongs to Vietnam. I am more happy for Vinh," the 39-year-old player shared.
