"I only got 5 for math, even though in class it often fluctuated between 7.5 and 9 points," Thy said.
TN (10th grade student, Luong Van Can High School, District 8, Ho Chi Minh City) shared that he usually maintains a score of 6 or above in 3 main subjects, but when taking the 10th grade entrance exam, his score was below average. In particular, his English and math scores were nearly 2 points lower than his class score, while his literature score remained stable.

Faced with the difference between semester scores and admission scores, some candidates this year expressed concern even though their first semester exam results were quite good.
With a total score of 20.25 for 3 main subjects in the first semester, Mai Hien (grade 9, Ho Van Long Secondary School, Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City) said she is still not confident because this score only evaluates her ability at school.
Minh Thy (grade 9, Hoang Van Thu Secondary School, District 10, Ho Chi Minh City) thinks that 2 points should be deducted for each subject or 2 points in total for the 3 main subjects as a basis and to try for the 10th grade entrance exam. The female student shared that she has 1st choice to enter Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) and determined to improve English when there are only 4 months left to review.
Surprised that her first semester exam score was lower than her usual ability, Quynh An (grade 9, Quang Trung Secondary School, Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City) said that basing her decision on her wishes based on her semester exam score is only a part, and many other factors need to be considered. "I will try my best in the second semester, or during my studies if I feel that my ability does not meet the requirements, I will consider changing my wishes accordingly. Currently, I still keep my first wish to Nguyen Cong Tru High School, Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City," An said.
The score range is from 1-3, based on the second semester score and the entire process.
Faced with the reality that some students are worried and even plan to give up their wishes when the results of the first semester exam were not as expected, Mr. Tran Vu Phi Bang, a teacher at Phuoc Binh Secondary School (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City), commented that basing on the results of periodic tests, especially final exams, to choose a school when taking the 10th grade entrance exam is reasonable, but the reality is very different.
"The periodic test is made by the school itself, so the level of difficulty cannot be comparable to the admission test, and the time to do the test is only 2/3 and the requirements are also less. The difference in scores between the 10th grade admission and the periodic test will be very clear for the average and above average students, the score range is from 1-3", said Mr. Phi Bang.
Therefore, according to Mr. Bang, the periodic exam scores only play a role in evaluating students in that semester. Students should rely on their abilities, background knowledge or final scores of the second semester to assess their abilities, and have an initial basis for choosing a school.
Teachers guide parents to register for grade 10 admission
Sharing the same opinion, Master Nguyen Huu Hung, teacher at SunClass Center (Da Nang City), shared that the first semester exam scores were not enough to fully assess students' abilities and their ability to be admitted to high schools.
"Some students have good academic performance but lack experience and are subjective when taking exams. Instead, students can base their scores on their entire learning process, their second semester exam scores, or the results of mock exams they have practiced over time. Students also need to refer to the previous year's admission scores of schools that match their abilities to choose the right choice," Mr. Hung advised.
From the reality of the teaching process, Mr. Hung noted that in math, students often lose points due to incorrect answers and lack of ideas and loose arguments. "Students should have a conclusion about the answer, check and evaluate whether the result is reasonable with the question, avoid rushing and losing points regrettably. Teachers will grade both knowledge and skills, so students need to present carefully, 'pick up points' for each idea to achieve the highest results", Master Hung concluded.
In addition, Mr. Bang also advised students to consider their ability first when registering for 10th grade admission. "Students should consider the distance from home to school appropriately. If the student's ability allows them to enter a top 1 school but it is too far away and they cannot travel by themselves, they should choose a top 2 school near their home," Mr. Bang advised.
Secrets to doing well in math for 10th grade entrance exam
Realizing that most students have difficulty with geometry questions and practical math questions at a high level of application, Master Nguyen Huu Hung advises students to combine learning with solving practical problems and avoid rote learning. "Through the results of solving problems, students should record their mistakes in a separate notebook, learn from their experiences and practice the subject of that knowledge thoroughly. Students should also avoid doing too many rough drafts because when copying them onto the official exam paper, they can easily make mistakes and lose focus," said Master Hung.
