In the "world" of green growth, Singapore is a "brand". For a long time, the island nation has focused its efforts on promoting green construction, is one of the earliest countries to start green construction, and is the third country globally in terms of green buildings.
Sharing with TG&VN on the sidelines of the 4th Ho Chi Minh City Economic Forum (HEF 2023) taking place this morning (September 15) at the City Party Committee Hall, Associate Professor Dr. Vu Minh Khuong, lecturer at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (National University of Singapore) affirmed that the smallest island nation in Southeast Asia attaches great importance to green development. Clean rivers, people enjoy a healthy life. The river does not become a burden for the present and future generations...
Rivers do not become a burden...
The first experience of green growth, according to expert Vu Minh Khuong, is to consider it a matter of survival for a generation. Green growth must be the mission and responsibility of today's generation to leave a better life for future generations.
Because it is a "matter of survival", we must use all our strength to carry it out. "Today is survival, tomorrow is even more important," Mr. Vu Minh Khuong emphasized.
The second is the strategic issue. "With the current trend of the times, with the current cooperation opportunities and the current strength of the country, how can we create the combined strength of one person as one to implement green growth?", he said. Raising awareness, combined with attracting international attention and funding, is the strategic issue that needs to be promoted.
Third is the organization stage. According to Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Minh Khuong, "there must be an organization, an agency responsible for coordination and support..." Structure is very important to monitor this entire process and be responsible to the people and the leaders.
Fourth is choosing leaders for specific tasks, from cleaning rivers to flood control, plastic waste management... "There needs to be a leader to help the city or country do that. If there is no leader, no one takes responsibility and then blaming the mechanism is not right," he affirmed.
Fifth, we should use our eagle eyes to think and learn from the international community. Appreciating the participation of many international delegates at this Forum "with countless good experiences", Mr. Vu Minh Khuong emphasized the need to "listen" and from there, take actions that are appropriate to reality. "Singapore's experience is not really new, but we can try to learn the best from what they have done, from the story of the subway, education to the green environment... We must do better than them, we will certainly develop successfully".
The power of "popular education"
Sharing about the roadmap for implementing green growth, according to Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Minh Khuong, first "we need to address issues that touch the hearts of the people, so that the people are convinced, realize that this mission is truly by the people, for the people, and supported by the people".
It could be cleaning rivers, creating a clean environment, effective flood prevention... For example, flood prevention techniques abroad are very simple, but in Vietnam they still follow the old method, which needs to be changed. Trees, environment... how to make everyone feel that every day we try, there is progress.
"What I want to emphasize is how to create an atmosphere like "popular education" that the world appreciates as Vietnam can create a resonant power, so that ordinary people can become extraordinary." Considering this a "very special point" in Vietnam, Mr. Vu Minh Khuong emphasized the importance of spreading green growth experience.
The ability to create total strength, the expert cited, could be from bringing foreign growth experience into schools. If there are people who post youtube clips about quick economic lessons abroad that reach tens of thousands or millions of views, they need to be rewarded promptly...
For the city named after Uncle Ho, very close guidance from superiors combined with the total strength of the people can create great success in the future, the expert from Singapore emphasized.
