Continue writing the unfinished 10 year dream

LYSUMAY.jpg
Ly Su May is determined to achieve high results in the 2024 high school graduation exam.

Ly Su May is a Red Dao ethnic group, born in 1995 in Ta Phin commune, Sa Pa town. In 2014, while studying in grade 12, an incident happened to her family, and at the same time, there was an error in her personal documents, so May had to temporarily put her studies on hold. After staying at home for more than a year, May got married and moved to Ngu Chi Son commune, Sa Pa town. After many years of working hard in society, May realized that knowledge was more important because applying for a job anywhere required a "minimum" high school diploma. Unable to find a job far away, May returned to her hometown of Ta Phin and applied for a job at a small company specializing in the production and trading of traditional medicinal bath products of the Red Dao people.

May shared: The more I work, the more I see the importance of knowledge and the decision to my income and promotion, so I asked the business owner to create conditions for me to study and work at the same time. So in 2023, I returned to study at the Sa Pa Town Vocational Education - Continuing Education Center after 9 years away from school.

With good preparation, seriousness in studying, and the support of the company where she works and the encouragement of her family, May soon caught up with school, knowledge and friends. In addition to class time, May still goes to work at the company, takes care of family matters and spends about 2 hours a day reviewing knowledge. At the end of the 2023-2024 school year, May achieved an average score of 7.3 - a good score, satisfying the girl who left school 9 years ago.

Ly Su May (the person holding the book) was very happy to have done well in the exams.

Before the important exam, May quit her job a month before the exam to spend time reviewing her knowledge, determined to achieve the highest result. May said: "Because I missed 10 years, I am really serious and determined to achieve high results in this exam. After graduating, I will go to vocational school and return home to start a business. I want to establish a cooperative or business operating in the agricultural sector to create jobs for local workers."

Through a short conversation with the reporter, the Dao girl - Ly Su May appeared very confident, optimistic and determined to achieve high results at the age of 29 to continue her unfinished 10-year dream.

Put aside housework to help your child "cross the gate of heaven"

In the middle of the rice and corn planting season, Mr. Sung Seo Pao (Mong ethnic group) put aside his housework and traveled more than 17 km from San Chu Van village - the farthest village of Thai Giang Pho commune (Bac Ha district) to go to Bac Ha town with his son Sung Seo Chinh to "cross the dragon gate".

Dù không biết chữ nhưng hằng ngày, ông Sùng Seo Pao luôn ngồi cạnh, động viên và nhắc nhở con ôn bài.

Even though he is illiterate, Mr. Sung Seo Pao always sits next to his son every day, encouraging and reminding him to review his lessons.

With a simple and kind face, Mr. Sung Seo Pao confided: When my parents were illiterate, life was very difficult. I tried to send my children to school, wanting them to broaden their minds. If any of them could learn, I would work hard to support them.

It is known that Mr. Pao's family has 9 children, including 6 girls and 3 boys. The oldest sister was born in 1995, the youngest son was born in 2008, and Chinh is the 8th child. The family has many children but only 3 brothers went to high school, the girls did not finish 9th grade, partly because of difficult family conditions, partly because they went to school far away.

These days, although farming work is very busy, when his son enters the important exam of his student life, Mr. Pao packs up and goes to the district to stay with his son in the school dormitory.

"I was also anxious at home, so I came down here to encourage my son. This is also the first time I've taken the graduation exam with my son. I've been here since yesterday, feeling nervous and worried, but I still believe he will pass the exam with good results," said Mr. Pao.

Ông Sùng Seo Pao cùng con trai út xuống động viên, tiếp thêm động lực để con trai - Sùng Seo Chính thi tốt.

Mr. Sung Seo Pao and his youngest son came down to encourage and motivate his son - Sung Seo Chinh to do well in the exam.

Every day, Mr. Pao reminds and encourages his son to study. Although he is illiterate, he always watches his son study attentively and sits with him. He hopes that his companionship will motivate his son to graduate and learn a trade to become a good chef.

During the exam, Mr. Sung Seo Pao will stay in the dormitory with his son - Sung Seo Chinh, both to take care of him and to remind him of the exam time.

Teacher Nguyen Xuan Toan, Principal of Bac Ha High School No. 1, said: We always create all conditions to support candidates and parents living in the school's dormitory. The presence of parents, especially parents from ethnic minority areas, not only encourages and motivates the children but also proves that the care and attention of parents in ethnic minority areas for their children's education has changed positively.

Nung ethnic female student with dream of becoming a doctor

12 years of being an excellent student, winning the Second Prize in Biology at the provincial excellent student competition in the 2023-2024 school year... are the impressive achievements that Trang Thi Luon (Nung ethnic group), a 12B student at Bac Ha Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities, has achieved. This female student always strives to study because she wants to fulfill her dream of becoming a good doctor to care for and treat people.

Tráng Thị Lươn luôn dành thời gian tự học để nâng cao kiến thức.

Trang Thi Luon always spends time studying on her own to improve her knowledge.

As the third child in a family of 5 children in Coc Ly commune (Bac Ha district), her parents are farmers, so their life is full of poverty all year round, which made Trang Thi Luon realize early on that she must strive to overcome difficulties, study well and pursue her dream.

Sharing about his learning and revision process, Luong confided: In each class, I listen attentively and take full notes to grasp the knowledge that the teachers impart. In the evening, I spend time on Biology. In addition to the knowledge in books, I actively seek out new knowledge on the internet, books, and newspapers.

Eel said that Biology is a subject closely related to daily life, so he pays attention to observing his surroundings and takes advantage of every moment and space to apply it to his studies. In addition, he receives the attention and dedicated guidance of teachers at school, which has "ignited" his passion and helped him love studying.

Teacher Bui Thi Thuy Van, homeroom teacher of class 12B, shared: Trang Thi Luon is a student who loves to learn but she is an introvert. While her peers like "hot" jobs such as tour guide, bank... she strives to study medicine with the hope of returning to her hometown to treat her fellow countrymen.

Trang Thi Luon and her friends took the opportunity to review their lessons before the exam.

Trang Thi Luon confided: I find Biology very interesting, it helps me gain knowledge about the biological environment, ecosystems as well as many causes of human diseases and ways to prevent them. The more I study, the more I want to become a doctor.

Sharing more about her dream, Trang Thi Luon said: The place where I live is about 15 km from the commune center, the road to the village is still a dirt road, narrow, very difficult to travel, so every time someone is sick, they have to go to the commune health station to see a doctor, which is very difficult. There are many poor households in the village, and they do not have the conditions to go to the hospital regularly, even many sick people only use leaves from the garden to treat their illness, making their illness worse, and they have to go to the district hospital for emergency care. I want to become a doctor to be able to help my family and the people in my hometown.

"There are many paths to success, but the shortest path is to study" is the saying that Trang Thi Luon always remembers and reminds herself to be steadfast in the journey ahead, determined to realize her dream of becoming a doctor.

Determination of 4 orphan candidates

Participating in this year’s high school graduation exam, Simacai District Boarding Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities has 4 candidates with very special circumstances. Some are fatherless, some are motherless, but they all have one thing in common: they always strive to pass the exam for a bright future.

Nung Thi Nhung, a Nung ethnic in Na Pa village, Ban Me commune, lost her father when she was just entering 10th grade. Thao Thi Ly's father in Sin Chai village, Sin Cheng commune passed away when she was in 4th grade. Hoang Thi Quynh Nga in Pho Cu residential group, Si Ma Cai town lost her father when she was just 9 years old. All three children's fathers passed away due to serious illness. Ly Thi Xuan in Coc Re village, Ban Me commune, every time she mentions her mother, she gets very emotional because in 2022, her mother suddenly passed away in a boat accident on the Chay River. Losing the breadwinner has caused many difficulties in family life and has affected the care and attention given to the children's daily activities and studies.

Nung Thi Nhung confided: Before he passed away, my father hoped that I would become a teacher and help students in remote areas with many difficulties to excel in their studies. Since then, I have always kept my father's wishes in mind and determined to study well. After completing 12 years of school, I applied to study Civic Education at Hanoi Pedagogical University 1.

The wish for her child to study pedagogy is also the wish of Thao Thi Ly's father. She also registered for the Civic Education major at Hanoi Pedagogical University 2.

Hoang Thi Quynh Nga shared: My father passed away before I could say anything to him. There is a song saying “A teacher is like a gentle mother”, so I also want to become a teacher, and have the opportunity to return to my hometown to contribute, teaching children to become good children and good students. Therefore, I decided to register for the English Pedagogy major at Hanoi National University of Education 1.

Ly Thi Xuan chose Chinese major, Thai Nguyen University Branch in Lao Cai.

All four students studied in the same class, and did not have the complete protection and love of their parents like their peers. They taught each other, tried to study hard together during the 3 years of school, and encouraged each other when they remembered their deceased relatives. All of them became the pride of the school when they achieved good and excellent academic results for 3 consecutive years.

Meeting the children in the small room of the school's boarding area, when talking about their deceased relatives, their eyes were filled with sadness and tears. The memories and advice of their parents are the luggage and motivation for them to be determined to pass the high school graduation exam, continue their dreams and become useful people in the future.

Warm teacher-student relationship

Muong Khuong High School No. 3 (Cao Son area) has 107 students participating in the high school graduation exam at the district's testing site No. 2. Among them, Sung Din is a student with especially difficult circumstances. During his review and graduation exam journey, he always has the companionship and love of his teachers.

Din is the 6th child in a family of 8 siblings. His mother died early, and his father raised his 8 children by himself. Although he is 18 years old, Din is small and skinny, with sad eyes. Din is always a good student, trying to complete his studies well. After school hours and on holidays, he helps his father with farm work.

Knowing Din’s situation, throughout his high school years, teachers always cared for and encouraged him, especially his homeroom teacher Nguyen Quy Hung. Din’s family is poor but his house is near the school so he is not a student who can stay in a boarding school. In early May, in a meeting, Mr. Hung reported to the school’s Board of Directors and proposed to join hands to support him with meals and accommodation in a boarding school so that he can have the best conditions to study.

Ms. Lu Thi Dung, President of the Trade Union of High School No. 3, Muong Khuong District, always cares for and helps Sung Din.

Sung Din's dream of becoming a teacher originated from the love he received from his teachers at Muong Khuong District High School No. 3. Teachers are shining examples for him to follow in order to have a brighter future.

Please leave the hospital in time for the exam.

Before the exam registration day, Ma Thanh Soai, a 12th grade student at Bao Yen District High School No. 3, was still being treated at the provincial General Hospital and was recovering from an appendectomy, but she was determined to be discharged in time for the exam.

With the consent of the doctors, the family completed the discharge procedures to attend the exam, which was considered a major turning point in life.

Ông Ma Văn Tám vui vẻ khi con trai kịp bình phục để tham dự kỳ thi.

Mr. Ma Van Tam was happy when his son recovered in time to take the exam.

Mr. Ma Van Tam went home to take care of his son from the hospital, and yesterday he took Soai from Nghia Do commune to Pho Rang town to do the exam procedures. Mr. Tam said that 5 days ago, when he had just returned from studying for the exam, his son complained of a stomachache, so his family took him to the provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment and was scheduled to have an appendectomy. Knowing that Soai was a candidate preparing for the graduation exam, the doctors took care of him so he could recover quickly.

Mr. Tam added: "Although the family does not have the means, we still try to rent a room in the town center for Soai to rest, but she asked to stay in the dormitory of the district's Ethnic Boarding Secondary and High School with her friends." Soai confided: I stay here to review my lessons with my friends and get to the exam location more conveniently.

Feeling sorry for her parents' hardships, throughout her high school years, Soai always tried her best to study and achieve high results. Soai's wish is to enroll in the Security Academy, so she will try her best in every exam.

Before saying goodbye, Mr. Tam encouraged his son to try his best in the exam but also to rest and take care of his health. "There are teachers and medical staff here so I feel secure," Mr. Tam said.

In addition to Ma Thanh Soai, in the dormitory of Bao Yen District Boarding Secondary and High School for Ethnic Minorities, there are 152 students from Bao Yen District High School No. 3 (located in Nghia Do Commune) who are also arranged to eat and stay here. The school assigned 2 teachers to accompany the students throughout the exam to take care of their food, accommodation, study and remind them about the exam regulations and schedule.

Arriving at the exam site in a wheelchair with the determination to pass Hanoi Medical University

During this year’s national high school exam, at the Lao Cai High School for the Gifted, there was a case of a candidate who broke his leg and had to be moved by wheelchair to the exam room. That was Nguyen Duong Trung Nghia (born in 2006), a student at Lao Cai High School for the Gifted.

Nguyen Duong Trung Nghia is the hope for the top student of Block B of Lao Cai province in the 2024 National High School Graduation Exam.

Sharing with reporters, Trung Nghia said: More than a month ago, I unfortunately had an accident and broke my leg. Because the injury was quite severe, I had to undergo many surgeries at Viet Duc Hospital (Hanoi), so I cannot walk normally and have to move around in a wheelchair.

Despite having health problems during the graduation exam preparation period, Nghia did not feel too much pressure while studying. “I majored in Mathematics, and before taking the graduation exam, I had some time to review my knowledge and take many mock exams at school, so I was not too worried. However, I was still a bit nervous,” Nghia confided.

Trung Nghia's parents were present to encourage their son to "pass the gate of heaven".

Nghia said the accident had a big impact on his psychology. However, he is still confident and hopes to get a high score in the exam. Trung Nghia's goal is to pass the entrance exam to Hanoi Medical University.

Because of his sore leg, Trung Nghia was given the opportunity by the school to stay in the dormitory on the first floor. Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam, Trung Nghia's father, shared: Both my husband and I are teachers working in Bac Ha district. With the spirit of "all for the child", we have arranged our own work so that we can spend all our time focusing on supporting and accompanying our child during the graduation exam.

“When we saw Trung Nghia arrive at the exam site, my friends and I helped him up to the exam room. Although it was a small task, we were very happy and hoped Nghia would do well on his exam,” said a volunteer at the exam site of Lao Cai High School for the Gifted.

The care, help and support from family, school and friends have been and are the spiritual motivation that helps Nguyen Duong Trung Nghia confidently fulfill his dream of becoming a new student at Hanoi Medical University.

Strive to live up to family expectations

We met Cu A Chu (Mong ethnic group), a student at the Bao Yen District Vocational and Continuing Education Center, when he and his friends had just finished the first day of the exam. Taking the opportunity to compare answers with his friends, Chu was temporarily satisfied with his exam results. Chu shared: "The Math exam had many difficult questions, I tried to do well on the easy questions so I hope I will have enough points to pass the graduation exam."

Cu A Chu was born into a poor family with many siblings in Lang Vanh, Xuan Thuong commune, Bao Yen district. In the whole family, only Chu was allowed to finish high school by his parents. Some of his older brothers were uneducated since childhood, and some had to drop out of middle school.

Cu A Chu took the opportunity to review his lessons before the exam day.

Because he loved his parents, there were times when Chu wanted to quit school to stay home and help with the housework, but his whole family advised him to try hard to finish high school and then learn a trade so that he wouldn't have to work as hard as his parents and brothers in the future.

Ms. Hoang Thi Chien, Chu's homeroom teacher, said that when he first started school, Chu was shy and rarely talked to his friends or teachers. Knowing his difficult circumstances, the teachers always encouraged and motivated Chu to be more confident in communicating and studying, and gradually Chu became more courageous. Cu A Chu's academic achievements throughout his high school years were a great effort of this student.

Sharing about his plans, Chu said: After graduating, I want to apply for a job at a factory or industrial park in neighboring provinces, then depending on the local job demand, I will apply to study a suitable major.
