Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kien – Director of Mekong Organics Company Limited – an Australian enterprise researching and developing in the fields of organic agriculture, sustainable agriculture and climate change adaptation. Mr. Nguyen Van Kien is a Vietnamese in Australia who wishes to open English classes for children in remote areas and children of farmers in his homeland.

Mr. Khang has been connecting with Mekong Organics to open free English classes for a long time. Currently, Mr. Khang is the coordinator for the class in Vung Liem district.

“I want to spread the love of learning English to the children here. Good English skills will help them study better at school, and have better career opportunities in the future. I also want to create conditions for children in rural areas to access foreign languages like those in urban areas,” said Mr. Khang.

For nearly 2 years, free English classes have been opened for children to learn online via the Zoom platform with volunteer foreign teachers. Currently, there are about 10 children aged 14-17 studying.

Every week, Mr. Khang and the Vietnamese volunteers choose a topic such as family, organic farming, ethnic culture, etc. Students will prepare content about that topic in advance. When entering the class, there will be a Vietnamese volunteer coordinating the class to create interaction between the children and the foreign teachers.

In 2024, two diligent and persistent students from the class were selected to study a free short-term English class in Australia at Mallacoota P-12 College (Mallacoota town, Victoria state, Australia). Phan Tuan Kiet - an 11th grade student at Vo Van Kiet High School (Vung Liem district, Vinh Long) was selected to study in Australia. He shared that after nearly 1.5 years of perseverance without missing a class, Kiet's foreign language skills have now improved significantly.

“After two months in Australia, living and studying with the locals, I realized that English is important for young people like me. Here, I learned to understand more about the cultures of other countries, how to do organic farming… very useful,” Kiet said.

The children also improved their English skills such as the ability to communicate with native speakers, introduce to international tourists the culture, specialties and people of Vinh Long countryside...

Dang Phuc Hau, a 12th grade student at Vo Van Kiet High School (Vung Liem District, Vinh Long) excitedly said that after nearly a year of participating in Mr. Khang's foreign language class, he noticed that his foreign language proficiency had improved quite clearly.

“I feel my listening and speaking skills are much better than before. When meeting native speakers, I am no longer shy. Every Sunday morning from 7-8am, I join my friends on Zoom to study.

The class is for practicing and improving English, so I don’t feel any pressure, I just know that I have to make the most of every hour to improve my foreign language skills. Good foreign language skills will open up better career opportunities for me,” Phuc Hau said.
