That's why customers often jokingly say that the porridge shop run by Mrs. Sau (57 years old, real name Huynh Thi Tiep) and her husband is the "fastest-selling porridge shop in Ho Chi Minh City". Is the rumor true?
"Super cheap"... 20,000 VND/bowl
Early this morning, I braved the traffic jam to find Mrs. Sau's pork offal porridge stall, nestled on Doan Van Bo Street (Ward 16, District 4). The street was lined with numerous breakfast food stalls, creating a bustling atmosphere of buying and selling, and the aroma of food filled the air – a well-known culinary area in Ho Chi Minh City.
Mrs. Sau's porridge shop opens at 7 a.m., and by 7:30 the pot of porridge is almost empty.
Knowing that Mrs. Sau's stall only sells for one hour, from 7 to 8 in the morning, I made sure to arrive early. Arriving at 7:30, I was surprised to find the pot of porridge almost empty, with customers flocking in to eat on the spot or buy takeout, overwhelming Mrs. Sau and her husband, along with their cousin who helped sell.
At first glance, Mrs. Sau's porridge stall seemed just like any other I'd eaten at. It's more of a small stall with a few plastic chairs for customers to sit and enjoy their breakfast, mostly for takeout. I was curious to know how delicious the pork offal porridge here was, given the incredibly large number of customers.
After chatting with a few regular customers, I gradually learned part of the answer. Mr. Ly Thanh Khon (48 years old, residing in District 4) said that he has been a regular at the restaurant for over a decade. Almost every morning, Mr. Khon comes here to eat before starting his delivery work.
A bowl of porridge here costs at least 20,000 VND.
"Firstly, the porridge here is incredibly cheap, only 20,000 VND per bowl. Where else can you find a bowl of porridge this price with such quality? Secondly, the owner cooks it well, it tastes just right, especially the offal which is cleaned thoroughly and doesn't have any unpleasant smell."
"I eat porridge in the morning to fill my stomach, not too full but enough energy to work. The shop is also near my house, so I go there every day of the week. I've become addicted to it. But I also try to eat quickly so I can get back to work and make room for others," he said with a chuckle.
Selling porridge to support my child's university education.
Seeing the pot of porridge almost empty, I immediately ordered a full bowl because I was afraid it would run out and there would be nothing left to eat later. Indeed, the bowl of porridge the owner made for me was one of the last portions of porridge for the day at this eatery. At exactly 7:55 PM, the shop ran out completely. Customers asking to buy more only received the answer: "We're out of porridge, sir/madam! We apologize!"
It seemed that people were used to arriving late, so no one seemed annoyed. Many even managed a quick smile at the owner before leaving, which made me feel the warmth and friendliness between the owner and her customers.
Customers love Mrs. Sau's pork offal porridge because of its rich flavor.

"That's how it is here, everything's sold out in an hour. On slow days, it's a little later, but slow? At Mrs. Sau's shop, you can probably count the number of slow days in a year on one hand," a customer added, and everyone laughed.
With fewer customers, the owner finally had time to confide in me, telling me that she had opened this porridge stall over 30 years ago, on this very street. Before that, when she married into the family, she also helped her mother-in-law sell porridge and affordable rice dishes.
"My mother told me to start my own business to make a living. I listened to her and opened a porridge and offal soup stall, and it's doing quite well. The number of customers is increasing day by day. The reason I only sell for an hour is because I sell out quickly and then go home. I make four pots, enough to sell in the morning," the owner said, smiling broadly.
For the past eight years, she stopped selling bean porridge and focused on selling pork offal porridge because she "no longer had the strength." Her husband and cousin have also helped her sell for many years. The owner is proud that thanks to this pork offal porridge stall, she was able to support her son through university and help him become successful. Her son is also her greatest pride, besides the pork offal porridge stall that she has dedicated her whole life to building.
The restaurant is located at 635 Doan Van Bo Street (Ward 16, District 4).
When asked about the secret to her large customer base, the owner said, "There's no special secret," as she cooks just like everyone else. But she said that cooking with heart, combined with the experience she's gained over three decades and her knack for business, is what has kept her customers coming back for so many years.
While many other shops and stalls nearby continued operating, the owner and her husband began packing up to go home and rest after an hour of working non-stop. The owner said that her happiness each day came from being tired like this, because the more tired she was, the more customers appreciated her and the food she lovingly prepared.
