Identifying the development of key agricultural products, typical of the locality, contributing to creating a breakthrough in economic development, the Party Committee and government of Van Mieu commune, Thanh Son district have proactively proposed solutions, focusing on improving productivity and product quality, meeting market demand, and gradually improving the quality of people's lives.
Members of the "Introducing and promoting Muong specialties" association in Van Mieu commune, Thanh Son district process local specialties to serve customers inside and outside the province.
Van Mieu commune currently has over 1,900 households, more than 8,000 people with 3 ethnic groups Muong, Dao, Kinh living together, of which Muong ethnic group accounts for 75%. The whole commune has over 80% of households directly engaged in agricultural production. In order to change the traditional farming habits, small scale, unconcentrated, low economic efficiency, the Party Committee and the commune government have developed plans and re-planned production with the following goals: Developing agricultural and forestry production, focusing on raising large livestock, planting trees for timber and paper materials, encouraging people to plant new trees, convert large timber trees to increase productivity, build infrastructure to serve production. At the same time, promote internal resources, actively transform the economic structure towards commodity production, establish linking groups to promote and develop typical local products.
In order to promote and consume Muong specialties, helping to increase income for members, in October 2021, the Commune Women's Union established a Joint Group "Introducing and promoting Muong specialties" with 5 members. The products are grown, cared for or processed according to traditional recipes of the Muong people. While selecting typical agricultural products and searching for and developing new products based on market demand, the Joint Group is currently introducing and selling local products including: Pickled bamboo shoots, pickled cassava leaves, chili bamboo shoots, dried tea, dried bamboo shoots, radishes, hill chickens, sticky rice, fruits...
Ms. Ha Thi Hong Hai - Head of the Joint Group happily shared: "With some unique secrets in the processing process, although newly developed into goods, the products of the Joint Group have quickly become known and favored by everyone, the income of member households has also been raised, gradually developing steadily. Currently, each year, the Joint Group has a revenue of nearly 400 million VND".
Currently, Van Mieu is one of the communes with a stable tea harvesting area of about 270 hectares. The commune actively propagates and mobilizes people to raise awareness, change farming practices; creates conditions for people to participate in training courses on pest control and intensive tea cultivation. To improve the value and quality of products, from traditional tea cultivation, people have clearly changed both in thinking and farming methods towards applying scientific and technical advances in safe tea production. Households have actively applied new scientific and technical advances with many modern machines such as rolling machines, rotating machines, vacuum machines... On average, 1 hectare of production according to safe processes brings in twice the income compared to traditional tea production, with diverse tea products to meet customer tastes.
Along with directing the development of tea cultivation combined with tea processing, the commune always focuses on agricultural extension work, opening training courses on cultivation and livestock raising techniques for people; building model models, supporting production development through directing planting according to the crop calendar, providing seeds, fertilizers, supporting capital to help poor households raise breeding cows, and raising bees for honey. In particular, doing a good job of irrigation, ensuring irrigation for cultivated land, actively preventing diseases on crops and livestock, applying science and technology to production. Many comprehensive economic models of afforestation, fruit tree planting combined with livestock raising... with an income of 100-200 million VND/year are replicated in residential areas.
Comrade Ha Van Thanh - Vice Chairman of Van Mieu Commune People's Committee said: Thanks to the creative application in directing the development of agricultural and forestry economy, exploiting potentials and strengths well; focusing on promoting key agricultural products, typical of the locality, it has actively contributed to economic development and building new rural areas. The material and spiritual life of ethnic minorities in the commune has been constantly improved. Up to now, Van Mieu commune has achieved 15/19 new rural criteria, 8/14 new rural residential areas, the average income per capita of the commune has reached 40 million VND/year, the poor households in the whole commune have decreased by 0.4%.
